The world is going nuts over this adorable, unlikely family. After three years of swimming together, this marine family shows that they have a lasting connection. Now, the video of the narwhal and beluga whales is going viral.

A Lonely Narwhal Finds a New Family

The video was released by the Group for Research and Education on Marine Mammals (GREMM). This group is a non-profit that monitors marine mammals, conducts whale research and focuses on conservation. In the last few years, GREMM”s monitoring stations picked up something unusual.

It seems like a young narwhal has found a new family in a group of Beluga whales. Originally, the narwhal became lost after stumbling into the St. Lawrence River in Canada. Luckily, the lost narwhal ended up making friends with the beluga whales.

Narwhals are naturally striking creatures. They have a long tooth-like tusk that can grow up to eight feet in length. Because of this long tusk, narwhals have been called the unicorns of the sea.

This particular narwhal made friends with the beluga whales about three years ago. At the time, GREMM was monitoring the whales with a drone. The non-profit group spotted the beluga whales playing and swimming with the narwhal. While narwhals and beluga whales have similar genetics, they have different habitat preferences and eating habits.

Interestingly, the young narwhal ended up adapting the behavior of its new friends. Before long, GREMM had videotapes of the narwhal blowing bubbles at the water's surface like a beluga whale.

The unusual friendship might not be quite as strange as it seems. Narwhals and beluga whales are both known for being extremely social and friendly. Because of their friendliness, narwhals have sometimes gotten into tragic accidents by trying to befriend boats and humans. Luckily, the friendly narwhal in this story found a new family who appreciated him.

Animals Can Be Exceptionally Compassionate

For centuries, human beings thought that animals could not possess human traits like compassion or empathy. Recently, research studies have been showing just how wrong this stereotype is. The unusual bonding between the narwhal and the whales is just another example of the compassion and kindness of animals.

For human beings, these animals are a reminder of the qualities we need to create in the world. If beluga whales can be this open-hearted and compassionate, humans can be kind as well. These whales show just how important it is to accept someone who does not act or look the same as you. It has been three years since the narwhal and beluga whales met, but their relationship is still going strong.
