Barber Gives Discounts To Young Customers Who Read While They Are Getting Their Hair Cut Because He Says ‘Education Is Key’

We all know just how important reading is to young children. If you have kids of your own, then you will want to make sure that they start out reading as soon as possible. The quicker that they learn to read, the better. Many parents even read to their kids when they are in the womb to give them a head start on learning.

A barber in Tennessee feels the same way about the importance of reading. He told Inside Edition he wanted to do something to encourage all of the children in his community to read. Since he is a barber, he decided to use his skills to the best of his ability. He figured the best way to do so was to give a discount to any kid who read while he cut their hair.

Jermaine Scott quickly realized that the kids who came into his barbershop typically kept themselves busy by playing on smartphones and tablets. Jermaine wanted to see that change.

He decided that he would offer a discount to children who decide to read a book while he cuts their hair. Kids who read in his chair only have to pay $10.

Jermaine knew that he would have to have his own reading material available to start his project. He headed to his local library to stock up on various books for kids of all ages.

The discount is available every Thursday. Any kid who is willing to read while in the chair is eligible. Jermaine believes that it is important for young kids to educate their minds. He went on to say that he realized that he had never put reading as a priority when he was a child.

“You have to educate your mind,” Scott said to Inside Edition about the project. “Education is key."

However, he is hopeful that he can change the attitudes of some young children who come into his business.

Jermaine is also hopeful that other businesses will give his idea a shot. He has received a lot of support for his program, including books from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library he told ABC. We hope this is the beginning of something wonderful!
