Besides making Mui’s skin flake off at an abnormally rapid pace, the disease increases her risk of infections. It also gives her an abnormal appearance, and this was something Mui’s birth parents couldn’t deal with.

The serious symptoms Mui had to cope with were especially unpleasant. The psychological stress she suffered from was worse as she was treated unkindly. People would say hurtful things to Mui, and some would ask her sensitive questions. Many people would look at her inflamed and scaly skin in wonder.

It has been more than 20 years since the couple who adopted Mui initially became acquainted with her while they were volunteering at a hospital in a foreign land. Their names are Roger and Tina Thomas. They had heard that the girl who was deserted by her biological parents would be sent to a hospital for people with mental disorders, even though there was nothing wrong with the girl’s mind.

This hospital was a place that would separate Mui from the rest of the world. Then, Tina and Roger adopted Mui because they didn’t want to see her go to a mental hospital. Mui is 26 now. Out of all the people worldwide who have harlequin ichthyosis, she is among the oldest.
