Baby Penguins Cry Out As Predator Approaches, Then An Unlikely Hero Surfaces To Save The Day

The old adage, "there is strength in numbers" proves true, even in the coldest of places such as the Antarctica. Can you imagine how hard it is just to survive the frigid temperatures and harsh weather conditions in a place like this. Add to that the predators and enemies of cute little baby penguins.

The story begins as a small group of baby penguin chicks are waddling along, doing whatever it is baby penguins do. Suddenly, from out of nowhere, swoops in a huge petrel (a bird indigenous to this area) and tries to grab one of the chicks!

Luckily, the intended target was able to escape the petrel and make it back to its friends. The rest of the chicks tries to protect their pal, but it was only a matter of time before the enemy bird would strike again.

As luck would have it, a larger adult Adelie penguin comes over a nearby hill and rushes (well, maybe "rushes" is a generous term) to the group of frightened young ones and interjects himself between them and the bully petrel.

After thinking about it for a moment, the petrel decides it can find a tasty snack elsewhere and takes off for parts unknown.

"Whew!" The crisis was averted and life was able to get back to normal for this flock of penguins. Just like most of us would certainly stand up for our good friends if being attacked, so too did these sweet penguin chicks and the noble adult Adelie.

Imagine yourself in a situation similar to this. What would you do? Would you and your "flock" gather around and protect each other in a similar sort of situation? This would make a great story to discuss at your next get together, don't you think?
