Baby Giraffe Receives Customized Shoes To Heal Rare Foot Condition To Let Him Walk Again

You know how cute baby animals are. Some people love to watch videos of baby animals. The sigh of them is therapeutic to the soul. The sight of a baby giraffe with a pair of customized shoes is just cuteness overload. The sight will simply melt you away.

This story is about Hasani – a baby giraffe born a few weeks ago in the Seattle Woodland Park Zoo. Olivia, his mother, gave birth to him, and first, everything seemed fine with him except that there was something unusual about his feet. It occurred to the experts of the zoo that the giraffe had a very rare condition.

This condition is known as hyperextended fetlocks. This basically means that his back feet are not aligned properly. While this condition is more typical for horses (since the designated name for the condition), it sometimes happens to giraffes. This seems perfectly logical stemming from the fact that the legs of horses and giraffes are pretty similar.

As soon as the officials of the zoo were aware of Hasani's condition, they decided to do something about it. They got busy with the design and creation of customized shoes that could help his legs realign. The idea is that Hasani will wear these shoes as a trial. The small giraffe also has leg casts to improve the rate of his healing.

The associate veterinarian of the zoo, Dr. Tim Storms, mentioned that these shoes and casts will help him to exercise so that he develops properly despite his condition.

Zoo officials are happy that Hasani is doing fine with the shoes and they do not seem to bother him. Still, his condition is not cured completely yet, so they are keeping an eye on him at all times. He will continue to be monitored to make sure that he develops and grows normally.

The officials believe that he will be able to walk normally in time with the strengthening of his tendons and his supported exercises. Other than this condition, Hasani is in good health and is doing really well.
