We know that friends do what it takes to keep each other safe. Friends who love you will put their own lives on the line to save yours. And sometimes, friends come in unexpected forms. Kham La's best friend doesn't look like her. In fact, Kham La is a little elephant who lives in Thailand on the Save the Elephant Foundation reserve. Her best friend is a human. When her best friend seemed to be in deep trouble, Kham La hurried to save him from what she assumed was mortal danger back in 2016.

When this video made its way to YouTube in 2016, the world went wild. It still touches the hearts of every single person who comes in contact with it on the ElephantNews channel. And how could it not? In the video, viewers get the privilege of seeing Kham La, a baby elephant, rushing to rescue her best friend when she was under the impression that he was falling victim to the water.

Darrick Thomson is Kham La's best friend, according to Chiang Rai Times. In addition, he is one of the founders of the very foundation who saved Kham La's life. The Save Elephant Foundation is located in Chiang Mai, Thailand, and its volunteers and employees work day in and day out to run the elephant sanctuary and to rescue elephants who are being mistreated by humans. In turn, the people like Thomson who run the sanctuary develop strong bonds with the elephants, especially the younger ones like Kham La.

The video clip is heartwarming. Thomson is swimming along in the river enjoying himself and relaxing. A group of elephants moseys on by, also enjoying the day. As Kham La is seen strutting along, Thomson says her name to get her attention. Kham La, however, thinks her best friend is in danger of drowning.

Within moments, she rushes towards him and offers him her trunk to pull him to safety. She tries to save him from the water and stop it from going around him. Thomson is one lucky man to have the love of a creature so sweet and so pure.

Since it was uploaded onto YouTube in 2016, this video has garnered over 16 million views. And it comes as no surprise why. Kham La's fierce love for Thomson is so clear. It is also well documented. There are other videos on YouTube that show her trying to hold hands with him. There are also countless clips of her rushing to meet him when he calls her name.

Knowing a little bit about Kham La's history explains why she loves Darrick Thomson so much. She and her mother were 2 of 19 elephants who were liberated from the elephant tourism industry back in 2015, according to The Dodo. Prior to their rescue, they were abused and made to work grueling hours for the sake of tourists and money.

Fortunately for Kham La and her mama, Thomson and the other kind folks at the Save the Elephant Foundation work tirelessly to maintain the sanctuary for elephants and rescue ones who are still in captivity. These men and women are dedicated to saving elephants who have been abused for far too long. Instead, they are brought to the sanctuary and treated with the love and respect that all living creatures deserve.

Once you know a little more about Kham La, it is clear why her bond with Darrick Thomson is so strong. This little elephant loves the person responsible for saving her from a life of misery and torment.

They say that elephants' memories are immense, and her passion for Thomson definitely seems to suggest this saying is true. When she sees her friend is in "danger," her instinct is to save him — no questions about it.

There is nothing quite as cute as a baby elephant. This little one is extra special, though, and will be sure to warm your heart. Show this clip to your friends today to share the love.
