Because of health complications when he was born, a 9-month-old Reagan Caldwell of Broadalbin, New York suffered from poor eyesight. His father, Brandon, who serves in the Air Force, was deployed just before the young boy got glasses. This video shows the amazing moment Reagan sees his dad for the first time in 2017 after Brandon returned from deployment in Antarctica.

A then 9-month-old Reagan Caldwell from Broadalbin, New York, saw his father for the first time after returning from a two-month mission deployment in Antarctica, according to People. Since Reagan was born, he had never seen his father's face clearly due to his impartial blindness. The only thing he was familiar with when it came to his father was his voice and his scent.

Everything seemed perfect for Reagan when he was born. However, after just 22 days, baby Caldwell was admitted to the hospital and diagnosed with a bacterial infection, according to FOX 11. "He had brain swelling from meningitis which caused seizures. The prognosis at the hospital was kind of, grim,” Amanda Caldwell, Reagan's mother, told reporters at FOX 11.

At that time, Reagan's temperature was at 101 degrees and was increasing every minute, according to Today. While at the PICU, he started sneezing, and the doctors had to control it by inducing him with a four-day coma while also treating him with antibiotics.

According to the doctor's report, Reagan had developed Group B strep, leading to the development of complications such as bacterial meningitis and sepsis. While Reagan was in a coma, doctors continued treating him with antibiotics to help defeat bacterial meningitis.

When Reagan opened his eyes after four days, the eyes were closed, and he could not focus. According to Today, his pupils were not responding to light, turning the ordeal into a nightmare for Reagan's parents. Reagan had developed brain damage in his parietal lobe and occipital lobe leading to cognitive delays and cerebral palsy. The parietal lobe helps manage reading, vision, sensory, and tactical comprehension while occipital controls vision.

At this point, Reagan was diagnosed as legally blind since his brain was unable to read images, though he had perfect eyes. Reagan was administered with antibiotics and anti-seizure medication for two weeks, after returning home from the hospital. Although the anti-seizure drug made him cranky and sleepy, they had a lot of positive impact on his eyesight.

After some months, Reagan developed some vision struggles, creating a layer of hope for his parents. However, Reagan's father had to return to work since he was a US Air Force Captain. Amanda struggled to find eye doctors who could treat Reagan, but local doctors told her to wait.

She was able to find a doctor in Boston willing to help Reagan with his eyesight. Reagan was treated and given adorable glasses, which made the reunion with his dad memorable. Since then, Today reports that Reagan's cognitive abilities have also seemed to improve.

Amanda claimed that the deployment was the hardest yet by far, and it was hard for Brandon to stay away from his son. This was visible by the emotion Brandon showed after he held his son on his arms again.
