Imagine suffering a heartbreaking six miscarriages and finally being blessed with a beautiful baby. Now imagine getting the call that your baby was found breathless in your babysitter’s car? Unfortunately, this was the reality for the parents of two-year-old Zariah Hasheme.

Tammie Brooks, a 41-year old babysitter in Hobbs, New Mexico, frantically called 911 after realizing she had left the toddler in a hot car for several hours. As the Hobbs Police Department wrote on Facebook, "The child was left unattended in a car seat for several hours until Brooks realized the child was still in the car after running an errand." Unfortunately, her lapse in judgment cost Hasheme her life.

Zariah was pronounced dead when the authorities arrived at Brooks’ car. Brooks, due to her negligence, was charged with the first-degree felony of abandonment of a child and was held until she was released on unsecured bond from the Hobbs County Detention Center.

Demi Petrowski and Zachary Hasheme, Zariah’s parents, are completely devastated. “I had six miscarriages previously to having my daughter. I remember praying every single day, nonstop,” Demi Petrowski told KOB-TV.

After losing their only surviving child, the parents of Zariah Hasheme are trying to raise awareness. Demi emphasized the importance of getting involved when you notice a child alone in the backseat of a car.

“Always look at the backseat of the car, and if there is a child in there or you hear a child screaming, please just, you know, help,” she said in the same interview.

She continued by giving advice to daycare centers to take greater initiatives to locate missing attendees, saying that if they know a child is not there at their appointed time, they should always contact the parents or someone on the emergency list right away.

Brooks, expected to appear in court this October, has not yet made a statement, nor has her representation. As for Zariah’s family, there is a GoFundMe page to help with burial expenses.

Have you ever lost a loved one? Although this is a devastating story, it provides a sobering lesson for parents and caretakers alike. For adults running errands, consider bringing the child in with you or make proper arrangements. As Zariah’s family can confirm, nothing is more precious than life.
