The First Wives Club, starring Goldie Hawn, Diane Keaton, and Bette Midler, was a hit when it was released in 1996, and it quickly became a cult classic. Fans were delighted to learn that the three women are coming back together again to produce a movie called Family Jewels.

If you recall, in The First Wives Club, three ex-wives get together to take revenge on their husbands for dumping them to marry much younger women. They are strongly motivated by the suicide of a fourth woman, a friend of the three from college.

She took her life after her husband also left her for a much younger woman. Hilarity ensues as the women first get revenge on their friend's faithless husband and then turn their attention to each of their ex-husbands.

Kind of a Sequel

According to Deadline, the new movie is supposed to be a sort of sequel to The First Wives Club, or at least, it continues with the theme of what happens when a man gets divorced and then remarries. Family Jewels is a comedy that involves three generations (the wives and their children and grandchildren) who are all forced to spend Christmas together shortly after the man all of the wives were married to at one time or another dies suddenly in New York City.

The original team of women who starred in The First Wives Club are all currently 74 and are better than ever at acting and performing comedic roles.

The First Wives Club was not beloved by critics but was very popular at the box office, eventually grossing over $180 million. It also quickly became a cult classic, beloved by middle-aged women. The plot of the movie is based on a novel by the same name written by Olivia Goldsmith as per IMDb.

The creators of the movie wanted to explore the all-too-common theme of women being dumped by their husbands for younger women, but they wanted to create an image of empowerment of women, not portray them as victims.

Rumors of a sequel for years

There have been rumors of a sequel to The First Wives Club for years, but various reasons have been revealed as to why it never happened. A draft script was produced in 2005, but a strike prevented the project from proceeding according to Bette Midler in USA Today.

In 2006, Hawn stated to the New York Daily News as per Female First that work on a sequel had collapsed because the producer wanted to pay the trio the same amount of money they made for the first movie, a laughable concept. In 2016, Hawn confirmed a sequel was in the works, but then went on to say to the Inquirer that the script wasn't working.

For all you delighted fans out there, it looks like the barriers have finally been breached, and the long-awaited sequel will be out soon. Tell your friends about the good news!
