Sam Elliott isn't only a great actor – he is also a devoted husband and father to his beautiful wife and daughter. Throughout all these years, he puts his family above all else. For him, his daughter is his world.

Sam is a veteran character actor that is best known for his work in the Western genre. Some of his most popular roles include The Stranger in "The Big Lebowski" and Virgil Earp in "Tombstone." The star is also known for his signature mustache, deep, resonant voice, and tall frame.

Sam began his career playing minor characters in "The Way West" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." His TV appearances include "Gunsmoke," and the television films "Murder in Texas" and "The Shadow Riders." The actor's breakout film role was in the 1976 drama "Lifeguard," which is one of his few projects not in the Western genre.

In 2015, Sam guest-starred on the series "Justified" and won a Critics' Choice Television Award for his performance. The following year, he began starring on the Netflix comedy series "The Ranch."

In 2017, Sam starred alongside his wife, Katharine, in the film "The Hero." The film is about an aging Western actor who spends his time reliving the glory days and smoking until he is diagnosed with cancer. Katharine played Sam's ex-wife in the film.

"The Hero" wasn't the first film project that Elliot got to work on with his wife. Katharine starred in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" while Sam was only an extra in the film, so they didn't get to officially meet until 1978 when they were both cast in leading roles in the film "The Legacy." The couple got married in 1984, and they have a daughter together.

The couple had another chance to work together on the television movie "Conagher," which is an adaptation of the Louis L'Amour novel. The role earned Sam a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film.

Sam told The Los Angeles Times: "I think we just like making movies and having that creative experience together is the best. It's just fun. It's a whole different kind of energy to go home with someone you're working with rather than go home to somebody who isn't working. It's a totally positive experience."

When asked what the secret is to a long and happy marriage, Sam answered: "I think the bottom line is you've gotta want to be married. You've got to be in love with whoever it is, and you've got to be willing to work at it because it's definitely a two-way street. Once you figure that out, I mean the rest of it is like riding the storm, basically." Katherine added with a laugh: "You just ride the roller coaster – and hang on tight."

Apart from being a loving husband, he said he finds it fulfilling to be a dad to his daughter Cleo whom he described as his "world."

"It completes me. I've been married one time and I have one daughter, who I love more than anyone in the world. And that's where my world is," he said

In an interview back in November 1988, Sam opened up about his devotion to Katharine. He waited until he reached the age of 40 to marry and have his first child. He refused to do another series while his wife Katharine was involved with her show called "The Colbys."

"I don't want a third party raising my baby and neither does Katharine," he told The Ottawa Citizen.

Despite growing up with parents who are actors, Cleo revealed that they always encouraged her to pursue her musical goals.

"I got all their old vinyl," Cleo told The Malibu Times in an interview in December 2008. "So some of my favorite albums are Led Zeppelin, The Cars' 'Heartbeat City,' the Allman Brothers' 'Eat a Peach' and maybe some old Madonna."

Then again, Sam admitted in a past interview that music had been a part of his life, saying it has a way of making him feel emotional.

"I don't often break down and boohoo, but I'll shed a tear at the drop of a hat. Something will just move me, and my eyes will go misty. A lot of times it's music: Ray CharlesJohnny Cash. You can hear the whole world in certain voices," he told AARP back in July 2015.

In February 2023, Sam delivered an emotional message during his award acceptance speech at the 29th Annual Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards. He received the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series award for his performance in "1883."

Towards the end of his speech, he thanked the people who matter to him the most, including his wife, Katharine. But he did not only show admiration to his own wife, but also his own daughter Cleo who, like Katharine, he also proudly called beautiful in front of the crowd gathered at the event.

"Thank you to my wife, my beautiful Katharine, my partner through thick and thin and the mother of our beautiful daughter," he said in his speech which he described as the "most meaningful acknowledgment" in his 55-year career.

Meanwhile, Cleo shared a photo of her parents from the ceremony and captioned it with:

"Congratulations, dad!"
