Lauren Hutton is an American model, actress and fashion icon who has been an inspiration for many women over the years. She was born Mary Laurence Hutton on Nov. 17, 1943, in Charleston, South Carolina, to parents who were both passionate about sports. Growing up, she was a tomboy who loved to play basketball and football, and it was this love of sports that led her to pursue a career as a model.

Hutton’s modeling career began in New York City, where she quickly became one of the most sought-after models of the 1960s and 1970s, with her striking looks, easy charm and distinctive gap-toothed smile. Her early career was marked by her work with famous photographers such as Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Bert Stern, and her appearances on the cover of magazines such as Vogue – on which she appeared a record 26 times – and Harper’s Bazaar.

However, Hutton’s career was not without its challenges. She was known for her outspoken personality and independent spirit, and she often clashed with the fashion industry’s expectations of models. She challenged the industry’s standards of beauty by embracing her natural features, including her gap-toothed smile.

Despite these challenges, Hutton remained one of the most successful models of her era. She was the face of many major brands, including Estée Lauder and Chanel. In 1973, she secured the highest-paid contract for any model at the time for a Revlon campaign, earning $250,000 (about $1.5 million in 2021) for 20 days’ work.

Hutton also appeared in films, including “American Gigolo” and “Once Bitten.” She also continued to break down barriers in the fashion industry. Even as she nears 80, Hutton isn’t afraid to show off her natural beauty, as she did for a bra campaign for underwear brand Cuup in September 2022.

Hutton’s influence on fashion and beauty has been profound. She was one of the first models to embrace a more natural, effortless style, and her signature look of minimal makeup, tousled hair and classic clothing continues to inspire women around the world. She was also a trailblazer for models who did not fit the traditional mold of beauty, and her success helped to pave the way for more diverse representation in the fashion industry.

Hutton’s career has been marked by her talent, her independence and her commitment to authenticity and individuality. She has shown that beauty comes in many different forms, and that being true to oneself is the most important thing of all. Even as she feared aging out of the modeling industry, she wasn’t content with compromising on her principles.

In April 2022, she told Harper’s Bazaar:

“I started shooting with Steven Meisel, and I told him, ‘I’m not going to try and look younger,’ and he said, ‘I love that. That’s why I am working with you.’”

In 2019, she revealed to People she had tried Botox, but the results didn’t sit well with her.

“I tried Botox once and I jumped back when I saw myself because I had an eyebrow that looked like the Wicked Witch. Go figure. … I’ve let go that I look like a miniature Shar-Pei. The wrinkles are going to be there and they really are the badges of your life,” she said.

As for the legacy she hoped to leave women with, Hutton told the outlet, “We can be good-looking and vibrant in every way. We have a shot at being wise because we have so much experience. Take care of yourself and make yourself strong.”

Hutton proved she could walk the talk when she stripped down to her skivvies for an underwear campaign at the age of 78. Women’s undergarments brand Cuup enlisted Hutton to promote its line of minimalist and comfortable bras and, on Sept. 8, 2022, shared stunning photos of the former supermodel exuding beauty and strength in their wares. This is despite the fact Hutton had been averse to sporting bras in her youth. She told Vogue:

“I never wore bras until I was 50. I didn’t need them. Around 50 – or maybe it was 47 – I got a hold of an underwire bra, I think in Paris. And I picked one up, and I put one on, and I suddenly looked 30.”

Despite the revelatory discovery, Hutton soon became disenchanted with bras again.

“Around 60, I started taking (bras) off in the backs of cabs. I’d unsnap them, pull one shoulder out, and stuff them in my purse. Ever since (then), I had been looking for a decent bra and I couldn’t find one,” Hutton told the outlet. That was until she found Cuup.

The campaign snaps showed Hutton in a mesh bra and matching panties paired with a plain work shirt. She revealed her initial apprehension to Vogue about the shoot and said the “hairs went up on the back of my neck… Those images can be so lurid, especially when you’re 422,” but in the end, the photos turned out beautifully. Fans remarked on how strong and relatable Hutton looked in the comments.

“You are still simply said, ‘GORGEOUS’ 🔥🔥🔥,” one comment read, while another said, “You have inspired countless women to truly be their authentic selves. No plastic ever.”

A third comment read: “Oh my God! Ms Hutton is gorgeous today as she was at 21.”
