At 66, Jamie Lee Curtis Doesn't Hold Back, Calling Plastic Surgery A 'Genocide' That Has 'Disfigured' Women

In a world obsessed with youth and perfection, Hollywood legend Jamie Lee Curtis has always been a refreshing voice of reason and authenticity. The beloved actress, now 66, has never been afraid to speak her mind, but in a recent interview, she issued one of her most powerful warnings yet about the dangers of cosmetic procedures.
Speaking with The Guardian in July 2025, Curtis didn't mince words, using startlingly strong language to describe the impact of the beauty industry on women today.
“I’ve been very vocal about the genocide of a generation of women by the cosmeceutical industrial complex, who’ve disfigured themselves," Curtis declared. To drive her point home during the photoshoot, she even brought a prop. "The wax lips really sends it home,” she added.
The Oscar winner knew her choice of words would be shocking, and she explained that was precisely the point. She stood by her use of the word "genocide," a term she feels accurately reflects the scale of the issue.
“I’ve used that word for a long time and I use it specifically because it’s a strong word," she explained. "I believe that we have wiped out a generation or two of natural human (appearance)."
Curtis argued that the pressure to alter one's looks has become an epidemic, creating a society where natural faces are disappearing. This problem, she says, is only getting worse in the age of social media.
"The concept that you can alter the way you look through chemicals, surgical procedures, fillers — there’s a disfigurement of generations of predominantly women who are altering their appearances," she stated. "And it is aided and abetted by AI, because now the filter face is what people want."
The "Freakier Friday" star acknowledged that a filter might look "better" to some people, but she passionately disagreed with what that "better" truly represents. "Better is fake," she said firmly.

While she sees the damage all around her, Curtis clarified that she doesn't judge her Hollywood peers who make different choices.
"It doesn’t matter. I’m not proselytising to them," she said. "I would never say a word. I would never say to someone: what have you done? All I know is that it is a never-ending cycle. That, I know. Once you start, you can’t stop. But it’s not my job to give my opinion; it’s none of my business.”
Her powerful stance comes from a place of painful personal experience. In a 60 Minutes interview, Curtis revealed she had one cosmetic procedure when she was just 25, after a cruel comment from a cinematographer on the set of the 1985 film "Perfect."
“He was like, ‘Yeah, I'm not shooting her today. Her eyes are baggy.’ And I was 25, so for him to say that, it was very embarrassing,” Curtis recalled. The daughter of screen legends Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, she felt the immense pressure of Hollywood. “So as soon as the movie finished, I ended up having some plastic surgery.”
The decision is one she has regretted ever since. “That's just not what you want to do when you're 25 or 26. And I regretted it immediately and have kind of sort of regretted it since,” she shared.
That painful moment ultimately transformed her into a champion for aging gracefully and embracing one's natural self. She has since dedicated herself to undoing the very culture that hurt her.
“I've become a really public advocate to say to women you're gorgeous and you're perfect the way you are,” she said. “So yeah, it was not a good thing for me to do.”
