At 33 Weeks Pregnant, Woman Saves Toddler Who Plunged From Second-Story Window

An Iowa woman, who was 33 weeks pregnant, has been hailed a hero after she caught a 2-year-old boy who fell from a second-story window of a neighboring townhouse.

Kyrie Jones, 35, was walking Prince, her Pomeranian puppy, when she noticed something odd. There was a PlayStation and a window screen on the ground next door to her home. Initially, she thought that one of her neighbors was doing some cleaning, but then she heard a loud noise. When she looked up, Jones saw that a toddler was dangerously leaning out of the window as he was throwing things outside.

The pregnant woman yelled at the toddler to get his mother, but he didn't listen and remained so close to the window's edge. So, Jones immediately sprang into action by knocking and ringing the doorbell of the child's home in an attempt to alert the mother. However, her efforts went unanswered as no one came through the door.

Realizing the imminent danger, Jones swiftly called the police on her mobile phone and returned to the window to watch over the toddler. She also positioned herself underneath the child, knowing that his fall on the pavement could become tragic. Jones told The Washington Post it was a "pretty high drop" onto the concrete.

As she stood beneath the window and kept urging the child to call out for his mom, Jones noticed that he had lost his grip on the ledge and was clinging to it. Fearing the worst, she started screaming for assistance and hoped that the neighbors would hear her, but no one came to their rescue.

"The baby was holding on the ledge hanging," Jones relayed, holding back her tears, to KCCI. "So, I stood right underneath him just in case."

Within moments, the toddler attempted to pull himself back into the apartment but tragically lost his grip and fell. In a remarkable display of bravery and quick thinking, Jones managed to catch the falling child just before he hit the concrete ground.

"He kind of hit my belly a little bit. I think the adrenaline kicked in, and I didn't feel anything," the pregnant woman said. Aside from a few bruises on Jones's thighs, the 2-year-old boy was unharmed. Both were generally OK.

Police officers arrived on the scene shortly after Jones caught the child, and she wrapped him in her housecoat for comfort. They then brought him to the front of the townhouse, where his relieved mother emerged to retrieve him.

Sergeant Paul Parizek of the Des Moines Police Department confirmed that the mother had left the child unsupervised for a short period. However, she was in another part of the townhouse.

The incident has been referred to the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services. Authorities have not filed any charges against the mother at this time, but an investigation is underway.

Relieved, Jones is simply grateful to be in the right place at the right time. Had she gone for a walk with her dog earlier or later, then she might have seen the toddler on the ground.

“As long as the baby is safe, I am good,” Jones said.
