There is nothing like the love of a grandparent, and this is something Joanna Sema knows well. At age one, Sema moved in with her grandparents, and her grandfather’s presence in her life never diminished.

At 30 years old, she had the best wedding escort she could have asked for, her 94-year-old grandfather, Bronislaw “Grom” Karwowski.

In a touching walk down the aisle, grandfather and granddaughter glide to the altar, leaving many in the audience visibly touched.

What is more touching is Grom’s determination to walk his beloved grandchild down the aisle. In recent years, with his health failing, he had even ever-so-slightly pushed Joanna on to get married. Joanna recalls how four years prior he had gotten a pacemaker and told her she needed to hurry up--that he didn't have long.

Miraculously, Grom postponed his expiration date until two days after his beloved granddaughter‘s wedding day.

Joanna is grateful that so many are fondly remembering her grandfather, remarking that she is so honored that a part of him will stay alive in people's memory. She is happy people can see him as the wonderful grandfather he's always been.

With 13 grandchildren, Grom was no stranger to sharing. The way Joanna tells it, all 13 grandchildren would argue over who could lie next to their grandfather at night for his famous retelling of stories and fairy tales.

Yet, Grom was much more than a family man. He was a true war hero who deserves to be remembered for his service. In his youth, Grom fought with the liberators to free Poland of Nazi invaders during the Warsaw Uprising. For his part, Grom has been awarded various medals.

Certainly, a man of this caliber deserves to be remembered for his heroism in war; however, to Joanna, her grandfather was so much more than a brave soldier who looked evil in the face; he was a compassionate nurturer who guided her through life. He was her rock and anchor.

With such absolute love for the man who had molded her, Joanna beams when being walked down the aisle arm-in-arm with her steadfast mentor.

And her waiting groom knows just how important Grom has been in shaping his bride, giving Grom a kiss of gratitude for delivering his bride.

But what is it that Grom tells his beautiful granddaughter before handing her over? Joanna says he told her how proud he was to have made it this far to see her married.

At 94-years-old, Grom knew his time was up. He had made it long enough for Joanna.

And, lovingly, Joanna promised him he would not have to die in the hospital but, instead, be able to finish his last breath in his own home.

As a professional nurse, Joanna was able to be with him in the days preceding his death, where he was able to express to her his excitement about having their moment shared. In three simple words, he told Joanna how happy he was to see their story spread. He said, “We’re on Facebook!”
