Arnold Schwarzenegger Vows To Help 102-Year-Old Woman Getting Kicked Out Of Home Of 30 Years

Thelma Smith received an unexpected notice from her landlord on March 8. When she opened it she got the shock of her life. According to the LA Times, the Ladera Heights resident who just celebrated her 102nd birthday was given three months to leave her apartment of 30 years.

The Times reports that Thelma would need to vacate the premises so that the landlords’ daughter who just graduated law school could reside there. They interviewed a longtime neighbor, Pauline Cooper, who said, “She’s been there a thousand years and is paying very low rent.”

The reporters also discovered that this kind of landlord behavior is unfortunately entirely legal. The Los Angeles’ Rent Stabilization Ordinance allows for landlords to evict a tenant so that a relative can then reside in that housing. The move may be legal but still can be considered quite heartless.

Thelma’s friends and neighbors are banding together to see what they can do about this injustice, but it is one famous friend who is really setting the bar high. Hollywood actor and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger tweeted a saving grace for Thelma:

It is certainly a good sign for Thelma to have the Governator’s support in this incredibly tough situation. The centenarian had told KCBS-TV that, “The only thing I can say is that I’ve tried to live a good life,” she said. “I never wanted to harm anybody.”
