Probably when you think of "ancient history" you picture something like the pyramids. There are objects that have come out since then, though, that seem equally foreign - even though they came out in the 1950s!

Back then, it was standard for every car to have one. In fact, it was weird if a car didn't come with it! They don't come standard anymore. In fact, they vanished from most cars starting in the '90s and were completely gone by the early 2000s.

That definitely bothers some people who have a particular habit. This is because that habit is still around even if this device isn't. Plus, it's something that's both difficult and expensive to add to your car.

Yep, this is a built-in ashtray! There were lots of reasons why cars don't have them anymore. A big factor was the Surgeon General's campaign to reduce smoking.

Cars also started coming with things like automatic door locks and windows so ashtrays were harder to fit in. Finally, it started making customers uncomfortable.

The last built-in ashtrays were made by Chrysler in 1996.

These days, smokers can have a "smoker's package," which doesn't sound nearly as glamorous. It's an ashtray that can slide into your cup holder.
