Annette Bening Just Revealed What She Does After Her Most Intense Days on Set — and It Is Everything

Jul 30, 2026 by apost team

Annette Bening has one of the busiest schedules in Hollywood. In 2026 alone she appeared in "Dutton Ranch," the "Yellowstone" spinoff; played a crime boss in the Apple TV+ thriller "Lucky"; and starred as a mad scientist in the film "The Bride!" She has been nominated for five Academy Awards and shows no signs of slowing down at 68. She is also, at the end of every long day on set, going home to her mother.

Shirley Bening, 97, has lived with her daughter and son-in-law Warren Beatty for several years. Annette's father, Arnett Bening, died in September 2023, after 73 years of marriage to Shirley — a number Annette described on "Late Night with Seth Meyers" in March 2026 as "crazy." Since then, Shirley has been part of the household. She reads scripts. She does crossword puzzles. She lives, according to her daughter, in her pajamas. And every evening at 5:30, she has a martini.

The ritual, and what it means to Annette, emerged in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE tied to "Lucky" — in which Bening, born May 29, 1958, plays Priscilla, a complicated crime boss navigating a world that tests every part of her. The role required intensity and emotional precision. What it required at the end of the day was the opposite.

"It's very cathartic, getting to do some of these things. I really enjoyed it," she told PEOPLE. "But afterward, I go home, watch baseball with my mom, who's 97 and has a martini at 5:30. Now, I don't have a martini, because I can't handle it. But I have a glass of wine, sit, hang out, see my husband."

The detail — the 97-year-old mother, the martini, the baseball — immediately resonated with everyone who heard it.

The picture Bening painted of her evenings was specific and warm. "My mom's lived with me for a few years, and she's a wonderful person," she told PEOPLE. "So just kicking back, especially after that kind of a day. But that's been the case for so many years."

On "Late Night with Seth Meyers" in March 2026, she had elaborated on what those evenings look like from the inside. "She is a remarkable woman," Bening said of Shirley. "She lives in her pajamas in my house and she does crossword puzzles and reads like a maniac. Often reads scripts of mine." She described losing her father after 73 years of marriage with characteristic warmth. "I lost my dad a few years ago. They were married 73 years, which is crazy."

The public response was immediate. Comments called Bening "classy," "incredible," and "an example." The image of an Oscar-nominated actress winding down from playing a crime boss by watching baseball with her 97-year-old mother over a glass of wine resonated as something unexpectedly real — a portrait of a woman at 68 who had figured out what mattered and arranged her evenings accordingly.

Bening has been married to Warren Beatty, born March 30, 1937, since 1992. They share four children: Stephen, 34, Benjamin, 31, Ella, 26, and Isabel, 23. Her mother, Shirley, is still going strong. New episodes of "Lucky" air every Wednesday through Aug. 19 on Apple TV+.
