Actress Anne Hathaway spoke out against legislators of the anti-abortion movement that is sweeping the U.S. in an Instagram post in May. One of the strictest bills put into place by this movement was passed by Alabama legislators. It calls for a ban on abortions with limited exceptions. Hathaway who is an award-winning actor and UN Women Goodwill Ambassador insisted that not only white men but white women lawmakers are controlling women's bodies and will be complicit in the deaths of minority women stemming from this movement.

The Alabama abortion bill not only amounts to a near-total ban on abortion in the state but could also punish doctors who perform abortions with life in prison according to CNN. Hathaway has been vocal in the past about women's rights and dedicates her efforts towards affordable childcare services and shared parental leave. She told unwomen.org, "it is time we collectively intensify our efforts and ensure that true equality is finally realized."

Anne Hathaway went to her personal Instagram to take a stance on the Alabama abortion bill issue.

Hathaway posted several pro-choice photos while saying the new Alabama law is primarily the work of white men but that it was white women who sponsored and signed the bill into law. In the photos posted she shared an image from an Instagram user that read, " A white woman wrote the law. A white woman governor will sign it. 62% of non-college educated white women voted Republican in 2016. This is a powerful and disgusting image, but we also have to address the complicity of white women."

Within the post, Hathaway posted a tweet from Bernie Sanders on Instagram that said the abortion ban in Alabama is not about protecting life but about controlling women’s bodies. She also shared another image that read, "Men shouldn't be making laws about women's bodies."

In her written post, she also says how the anti-abortion laws will raise the deaths among minority women. She insisted the actions of the white women who had a hand in the legislation of the Alabama abortion bill will lead to unnecessary and avoidable deaths of women of whom will be disproportionately poor and/or black. Hathaway ended her post with the words “Speak up. Show up. Don’t give up.” and attached pro-choice foundations that receive donations.
