Anna Nicole Smith’s Daughter Dannielynn Dazzles In Her Mom’s Iconic Black Gown Two Decades Later

Dannielynn Birkhead, the 18-year-old daughter of the late Anna Nicole Smith and Larry Birkhead, continues to honor her mother’s memory in a deeply meaningful way. Smith, who became a beloved figure in pop culture, left behind a lasting legacy, and her daughter is carrying it forward with grace. 

On the eve of the 2025 Kentucky Derby, Dannielynn attended the prestigious Barnstable Brown Gala in a special gown that once belonged to her mom. The black floor-length dress, initially worn by Smith to the same event in 2004, features a plunging neckline, crystal-embellished straps, and an audaciously low back, capturing the essence of her mother’s bold, glamorous style.

Ahead of the gala on May 2, 2025, Larry, 52, shared how emotional it was to see his daughter in the iconic dress with PEOPLE Magazine.

“It was emotional because the last time I saw that dress was on Anna,” he said, reflecting on the deep connection to the past. Larry fondly recalled his first meeting with Smith at the Barnstable Gala in 2003, which added further significance to the moment.

Larry also reminisced about when Dannielynn was a little girl, walking up to the dress and placing her hand on it.

“And now that she’s actually old enough to wear it, it just seems surreal that we’re at this moment,” he said.

The moment encapsulated the bittersweet passage of time and the enduring bond between mother and daughter.

To mark the special occasion, Larry explained why the moment involving Smith’s dress was so emotional on Instagram.

“Dannielynn is wearing Anna Nicole’s dress that she wore 21 years ago to this same event. Life full circle,” he said, continuing, “She said she chose the dress because it was her Mom’s and ‘super cool.’” 

As Dannielynn walked the red carpet, she told Access Hollywood:

“This is the closest to a hug I can get from her.”

The 18-year-old selected the gown herself, which Larry noted was “a little edgier for her than most dresses she wears.”

“I think she’s doing a fashion experiment for herself,” he said, adding, “Also, I think it’s really meaningful for her to wear. I’m just glad she’s starting to wear some of (Smith’s clothes) because she could pick out an outfit a day for the rest of her life and never wear the same thing twice.”

Larry also revealed his investment in preserving Smith’s belongings.

“I spend over $200,000 in storage bills to conserve everything for her. I just hope that she would appreciate some of these things someday,” he explained, adding, “She’s just now starting to get into the curiosity of some of the fashion and things in her mom’s world.”

Larry also reflected on the emotional journey of preserving Smith’s items.

“When somebody passes away, you think, ‘Oh, I’m not getting rid of anything.’ And then you go through the emotions of, ‘Do I really want this? Do I need this?’ But if there’s just one thing she can connect with, that gives her a sense of who her mom was. It was special that she picked out the dress,” he said.

Larry and Dannielynn have attended the Kentucky Derby together since she was 3. Reflecting on how the tradition started, he said:

“It was really born out of the babysitter canceling. ... Then everybody thought, ‘Oh, how cute,’ and it became a tradition.”
