A lion from Albania is now getting the medical attention he deserves after a group rescued him from the "zoo from hell."

Officers in Albania recently rescued several animals from the Safari Park Zoo because they were being mistreated. Many of the animals were underweight and sick. One lion that was rescued had an infection in his eye and was in pain when officers found him.

It wasn't until a photographer shared pictures of the animals that officials got involved. Many of the images portrayed the animals in conditions that were heartbreaking. When the Minister of Tourism in Albania saw the images, he ordered that the animals be removed and taken to a safe location where they could get the medical attention that they deserved.

The animals were being forced to live in cages and exhibits that were far too small for them. They weren't getting enough food during the day or enough water. There was no opportunity for the animals to escape from the rain and other weather elements. The animals couldn't escape from visitors leering at them if they didn't want to be seen.

At least half a million animals are suffering in the zoo industry. These animals are only a small percentage of those who have been rescued and received the help that they need. The zoo is privately owned and has been responsible for lions, a bear, monkeys, and deer.

Aside from a lion who had an eye infection, a wolf was painfully malnourished and barely clinging to life when it was found. Vets who have been to the zoo have described the animals as being some of the sickest that they have seen.
