Angelina Jolie’s Daughter Zahara Opens Up About Their Bond — the Words She Used to Describe It Left the Room Speechless

Zahara Jolie has spent most of her life in the public eye — on red carpets alongside her mother, at advocacy events in Washington, D.C., and at one of the most photographed moments of any young person's life, being dropped off at college. But on April 26, 2026, she stepped into a very different kind of spotlight: a mother-daughter brunch hosted by the Pearl of Purpose Foundation at Spelman College in Atlanta. And what she chose to say in that room was something she admitted had not been easy to put into words.
Zahara, born Jan. 8, 2005, is a junior at Spelman College, founded in 1881 and widely recognized as the global leader in the education of women of African descent. She joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority in 2023 and serves as vice president of her chapter. Her path to this point has been shaped by a childhood unlike most — adopted from Ethiopia at 6 months old by Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, raised across continents, and introduced to global humanitarian work before most children finish elementary school.
Despite that backdrop, or perhaps because of it, Zahara has carved out a life of her own in Atlanta, building friendships, taking on leadership roles, and developing a deep interest in mentorship. Her mother, Angelina Jolie, born June 4, 1975, was in the audience at the brunch — a detail that made the speech not just a public reflection, but a direct message from daughter to mother, delivered in front of a room full of women who understood exactly what that kind of bond can mean.
What Zahara said in that speech — and how she described her relationship with Jolie — is the kind of honesty that rarely makes it out of private conversations.

Standing at the podium, Zahara began by acknowledging how difficult the task in front of her was. "When asked to speak with you all today on the value of mother-daughter relationships, it felt challenging to find the words," she said.
"Not challenging because I don't value it, but because my mom and I have a unique, almost kindred, relationship that can be hard to put into words."
She went straight to the foundation of that bond. "Our love for each other is a found one," she said.
"I was adopted at 6 months old and given some of the most special and loving people as my siblings, with a mom who raised us on the value of helping others, being kind and always striving for growth as people. These values may sound simple, but in a world where kindness is overlooked and helping others comes at a cost, I am grateful to have had a role model to show me what it looks like to be a decent human being."
She also addressed the particular challenge of growing up in the spotlight. "With the addition of the public life that we live, it can be hard to find those special and intimate moments without being overwhelmed with the many eyes that are on us," she said. Yet her mother has never let that get in the way. "This has never stopped my mom from being curious about all that I'm learning in and outside of my classrooms at Spelman."
The speech ended with Zahara turning toward her mother in the audience:
"She is the most selfless, loving and understanding woman that I get to call my mom."
She said:
"I think back to a quote I saw years ago that said, 'I am a strong woman because a strong woman raised me. Thank you, Mom."
