Angelina Jolie's Daughter Zahara Marks Spelman Graduation With a Name Choice That Gets People Talking

On Sunday, May 17, 2026, Zahara Jolie walked across the stage at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, to collect her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology — and the crowd erupted. The moment was captured on a livestream and spread quickly online, not only because of the milestone itself, but because of the name the announcer called out. Not Zahara Jolie-Pitt. Not even a pause where that second name might have been. Just: "Zahara Marley Jolie."

It was not a surprise to those who had been following her closely. When Zahara joined the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority in 2023, she introduced herself the same way. The surname she had carried since birth — the one she shares with her father, Brad Pitt — had been quietly set aside. On graduation day, in front of her classmates, her family, and a global audience watching the livestream, that choice was confirmed one more time. Her mother, Angelina Jolie, born June 4, 1975, was in the audience.

Zahara, born Jan. 8, 2005, is not alone in this decision. Her older brother Maddox stopped using Pitt on documents as early as 2021. Shiloh made it official on her 18th birthday in 2024, hiring her own lawyer and paying for the name change herself. Vivienne's name appeared simply as "Vivienne Jolie" in the Playbill for the 2024 Broadway production she worked on with her mother. Pax has followed suit in his professional work. One by one, the children of one of Hollywood's most famous and fractured marriages have been making the same quiet statement.

Zahara's graduation was the latest chapter — but it was also something more than that.

The day carried weight beyond the name. Just three weeks earlier, on April 26, 2026, Zahara had stood at a mother-daughter brunch hosted by the Pearl of Purpose Foundation at Spelman and delivered a speech with Angelina in the audience. "When asked to speak with you all today on the value of mother-daughter relationships, it felt challenging to find the words," she said.

"Not challenging because I don't value it, but because my mom and I have a unique, almost kindred, relationship that can be hard to put into words."

She spoke about being adopted at six months old, about being raised with values centered on kindness and helping others, and about the particular challenge of finding private moments while living in the public eye. "This has never stopped my mom from being curious about all that I'm learning in and outside of my classrooms at Spelman," she said. She closed with a line that stayed with the room:

"I am a strong woman because a strong woman raised me. Thank you, Mom."

The graduation completed a chapter that had been building for years. Zahara had arrived at Spelman in 2022, found a community, joined a sorority, taken on leadership roles, and built a life in Atlanta largely on her own terms. She graduated with a degree in psychology. According to multiple outlets, Brad Pitt was not confirmed to be in attendance.

For now, the story belongs to Zahara — and the name she chose to graduate under says everything about where she stands.
