When warmer weather approaches, many people look forward to spending time at the beach. Whether you enjoy swimming, tanning, or just playing in the sand, the beach is the perfect place to spend your summer days. Normally, you know what to expect when you head out to the public beach. You’ll see bikinis, swim trunks, umbrellas, and refreshing drinks coming out of stocked coolers. You’ll also expect plenty of sun, sand, and water.

But sometimes, beachgoers get more than they expected when they head out on the ocean for the day. People visiting Panama City beach got the shock of a lifetime when they visited the area one day. But what did they see? None other than an enormous American alligator!

While beachgoers were enjoying the sunny day, they spotted a large alligator swim up to the shore. Not only did they witness the alligator swimming, but he even got out of the water to take a lap on the beach in St. Andrews State Park as well! Obviously, people fumbled for their cameras to get photographs of the amazing moment. One beachgoer, Lisa Powell Niemiec, posted the pictures on her Facebook page where her post went viral.

Some people reacted by stating that this was just a normal day for Florida beaches. In fact, over 1 million alligators reside in this state, making their appearance not as rare as you’d think. Others, especially those not familiar with the outdoor settings in Florida, could not believe the incredible sight!

In fact, this sighting may actually be more dangerous than rare. Alligator attacks have been on the rise in recent years, due to factors such as declining natural environments and gator populations rapidly growing. In the past few decades, there are around seven gator attacks per year.

Because Florida is developing so rapidly, gator attacks have risen in response to the human activity that encroaches on their natural living quarters.

But why was this alligator venturing into salt water when gators usually prefer fresh water? Well, alligators can actually withstand saltwater for a few days, but it’s likely that this gator needed a break from it during his walk along the beach.

Remember that if you ever see an alligator in the wild, keep your distance and be as safe as possible! What do you think about this alligator sighting? Are you scared of these large creatures?
