An 8-Year-Old Threw a Paper Airplane Over a Fence to Ask Her Neighbor to Play Taylor Swift and What Happened Next Has the Internet in Tears

On April 21, 2026, an 8-year-old girl named Madeline Hulec was at home in Lakewood, Ohio, when she heard her new neighbor playing guitar on his porch. She wanted to ask him to play a Taylor Swift song. She was too shy to knock on the door. So she asked her mother, Natalie, for a piece of paper, wrote out her request in her own handwriting, and — because she is 8 and paper airplanes are harder than they look — handed it to her mom to throw over the fence.

The neighbor was Ethan Hayes, 26, a full-time musician who had moved in the previous September. He plays covers at bars and wineries and writes his own songs on the side. He picked up guitar during the COVID-19 lockdown and did not start singing until he was 22. On that afternoon, he was doing what he does every day: playing on his porch. He spotted something in the yard. Madeline's stepfather Russell came to the window to explain. The note was from Madeline. She wanted to hear Taylor Swift.

Hayes admitted he initially panicked — he is not, by his own description, "a die-hard Swiftie." But he knew "Love Story." He picked up his guitar and performed the 2008 hit from the porch while Madeline sang along from her window. Natalie recorded the exchange and later posted it to TikTok with the caption: "Pretty sure we hit the neighbor lottery."

The clip amassed nearly 4 million views. "We haven't seen one single negative comment," Hayes told NBC affiliate WKYC. "Just a really wholesome situation that I'm really grateful to be a part of."

What nobody in that neighborhood could have predicted was what happened next.

By the time the video reached millions of viewers, it had also reached someone else entirely. Hayes confirmed to PEOPLE that out of nowhere, he received a message from Taylor Swift's camp on TikTok. "They're like, 'Hey, Taylor saw your video. We want to send you something. Don't tell anyone until it gets there,'" he said. "I was expecting maybe a signed poster or something. And then she sent us guitars, which is insane."

Swift sent two signed guitars — one for Hayes and one for Madeline, who also received a personal note from the singer. When asked what she would like to say to Swift, Madeline's response was simple: "Thank you."

For Natalie, the mother who threw the paper airplane and then pressed record, the experience has been something she is still processing. "We had the windows open, we're making dinner and even Russell shouted out a little 'Woo!'" she told PEOPLE, recalling the moment they first heard Hayes playing. She called Madeline's idea to fold the request into a paper airplane "maybe the cutest idea" her daughter had ever had.

Hayes described the response as bigger than anything he had anticipated. The TikTok comment section filled with people saying it had restored their faith in humanity. "The world feels loud and fractured and exhausting," he said, "and somewhere in Lakewood, a little girl folded a piece of paper and sent it over a fence to a stranger. No algorithm, no agenda. Just a small, human impulse."

Swift has not commented publicly. She did not need to. Two signed guitars, delivered to a porch in Lakewood, Ohio, said everything.
