Keoni Ching is a student from Vancouver, Washington, who wanted to do something for "Kindness Week" at his school, Benjamin Franklin Elementary.

To help cover the existing lunch debts, Keoni started making key chains that he could sell for $5 each. After he began selling them, the key chains started to go quickly. Ultimately, Keoni raise $4,015 to help cover the costs of his school’s lunch debt along with money left over for six other schools.

School lunch debts are a topic that seems to be sweeping across the nation with business-owners and celebrities stepping up to help eliminate the debts and ensure that all kids are able to eat while they are at school. In the midst of high-class personalities that are rising up to help out, one eight-year-old boy decided that it was time for him to do his part. as reported here by ABC News.

Using a variety of different beads, Keoni started crafting little key chains to raise money. When he heard about the San Francisco 49er’s player Richard Sherman donating $27,000 to help cover lunch debts, Keoni had a light bulb go off in his own mind. When people heard about Keoni’s mission, they started buying his key chains as fast as he could make them. One woman asked for $100 worth of key chains so that she could pass them out to people, others added a bonus and paid him $100 for one key chain. Keoni reports that he made key chains for people all across the United States.

Keoni’s hard work paid off and he was able to give his own school $1000 to pay off their outstanding $500 debt. The remaining money will help to cover future lunches before the costs add up. The Franklin Elementary Principal Woody Howard points out that this will help impoverished families. While the lunches only cost $2 each, families that are struggling and have multiple children can see their bill start to add up fast. Keoni’s work will help to stop the debt before it starts to snowball.

We are so proud of Keoni and the hard work that he put into helping out the surrounding school systems. Do you know a kid who has gone out of his or her way to help the community?
