‘American Idol’ Contestant Shares Why Carrie Underwood’s ‘Thoughtful’ Gift Meant So Much

For contestants on “American Idol,” making it into the Top 11 is already a milestone, but for Hannah Harper, the moment came with something she did not expect. The 25-year-old singer shared on Facebook that Carrie Underwood gave each of the Top 11 contestants a special gift, something thoughtful, personal, and quietly meaningful. Along with a piece of Tiffany & Co. jewelry, Underwood included handwritten notes for each of them, something that stood out far more than the gift itself.

“Didn’t think my first piece of Tiffany & Co. jewelry would come from Carrie Underwood,” Harper wrote, reflecting on the moment. But it was not the luxury item that stayed with her. “But truly, the part that got me the most was the handwritten note,” she added. “That meant more than anything. Just her taking the time to do that… it says everything about who she is.” Harper described Underwood as someone who lives up to what people hope she would be like, calling her “as down-to-earth and genuine as they come.”

Another contestant, Keyla Richardson, shared a similar experience, posting about the note she received and expressing how much the gesture meant to her. “Your kindness and generosity mean more than words can express,” Richardson wrote, adding that Underwood’s actions reflect “the incredible woman and class act” she is. For many of the contestants, it was a reminder that beyond the competition, there are moments that stay with you for entirely different reasons.

Long before the handwritten notes and quiet gestures, Underwood had already formed a connection with Harper during her audition, one that clearly stayed with her. Harper, a stay-at-home mom from Missouri, stepped in front of the judges and performed an original song titled “String Cheese,” a deeply personal reflection on her experience with postpartum depression. Even before the performance began, Underwood was drawn to her presence.

“You’re, like, my favorite person,” she told Harper, noticing the small details that made her stand out.

But what followed was something far more personal than anyone expected. As Harper explained the meaning behind her song, she spoke candidly about the emotional weight she had been carrying.

“I was sitting on my couch wallowing,” she shared, describing a moment of exhaustion and overwhelm. “Everybody wants to touch you, and I didn’t want to be touched.” She recalled a simple moment with her son that shifted everything. “He said, ‘Mom, open this. Open my cheese.’ I’m like, ‘Leave me alone with the doggone cheese.’”

But when she finally gave in, something changed.

“When I did I realized God had put me in that place, and that where I was in my house was the biggest ministry that I could ever have in being a mom.”

The realization stayed with her, becoming the heart of the song she performed. “I gathered myself, and I got up off the couch, and I quit throwing a pity party,” she said. And in the moment that brought both her and Underwood to tears, she summed up what that experience meant for her in a way that was impossible to ignore.

“And I kind of kicked the postpartum depression in the butt, and I said, ‘I ain’t doing it.’”
