Body shaming is a deep-rooted issue in today’s society. Contrary to popular belief, shaming someone for their appearance rarely results in positive change.
Amalie Jennings, a 30-year-old from Denmark, knew this truth all too well.
In an interview in 2019, she told her story: “Since as long as I can remember, I have been fat. And of course, that comes with a lot of bullying, a lot of picking on. My oldest memory of bullying is in kindergarten, when I was around four. And all the kids picked on me for being fat.”
As she grew older, the bullying got worse: “I gained even more weight, which meant I was picked on even more. I started self-harming, and I got picked on again.”
Jennings said: “I just had a really horrible self-image. I hated looking in the mirror.”
Her life changed when she met Sean, a British man, through an online video game. Their relationship started with a genuine conversation, free from judgment.
Though they had seen pictures of each other, it was some time before they video-chatted. What began as a friendship eventually blossomed into something more profound.
“My husband Sean and I met 11 years ago on a game on the PlayStation,” she recalled.
“At first, I thought he was an old man just looking for a young woman to talk to. But then I learned he was my age.”
Jennings and Sean became best friends, and she started hinting at her romantic feelings. When Sean didn’t catch on, she gathered the courage to confess them directly.
Jennings admitted: “It was the weirdest feeling because I hadn’t had luck with boyfriends before.”
She continued: “And finally, here’s this guy, 500 miles away, who fancies me as much as I fancy him.”

Jennings later moved to England to live with Sean, and their bond grew stronger.
According to Sean, the couple faced their share of judgment, with strangers frequently questioning why he, a slim, petite man, would want to be with her.
Some even accused him of having a fetish, but Sean was always clear that he loved Jennings for who she was, not her appearance.
In the 2019 interview, the couple also revealed they had cut ties with Sean’s father, though they chose not to disclose the fallout details.
Jennings’s inspiring story went viral that year, resonating with people worldwide. She used her platform to speak out against fatphobia and promote self-acceptance.
Jennings said:
“If I was ever to go back and speak to a younger Amalie, I would say, ‘Stop wasting time hating yourself. Yes, your body is different, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad body,’”
Jennings also expressed how we can not control people’s thoughts:
“You will never be able to stop people from saying things about you. You will never be able to stop them from looking at you. But you can stop letting it affect you...”
Tragically, after the confident and inspiring woman, known affectionately as “Malle,” shared her story, she passed away peacefully at the age of 30 on July 15, 2024.
Her obituary highlighted her impact on those around her, leaving a legacy of hope, love and strength.
It read:
“Beloved and missed. ‘When you see a star twinkle, it’s me waving at you.’ On behalf of the family, Sean, Mom, Pavia, and Pia.”
Without a doubt, anyone you ask today would likely admire the enduring love story of Jennings and Sean, a bond that lasted until the very end.
