Alligator In Florida Spotted Climbing Fence

In August 2019, Christina Stewart posted a video on social media of an alligator climbing a chain-link fence at Naval Air Station Jacksonville in Florida. Not surprisingly, it went viral.

According to Stewart, somebody had told her that there was an alligator on the base. She decided to take a look and was startled to see the reptile climbing up and over a fence and then posted a video of it happening on her social media

Her followers on Facebook were similarly stunned, and one issued a warning urging people to keep watch over their pets and children, especially when near water. They also commented that the alligator looked big enough to threaten “smaller adults.” Another Facebook follower said that they were glad that they lived in Ohio.

According to WTMV, officials have said that the sight is no cause for alarm, and that there are no plans of removing the alligator from the base so long as it poses no threat.

The University of Florida’s website includes a fact sheet devoted to “Alligator Safety.” It notes that alligators are good climbers and thus advises homeowners to erect a fence that is at least 4.5 feet tall to keep alligators out of their yard. It warns that a shorter fence may not provide adequate protection.

The fact sheet reminds people that bothering or killing alligators is against the law. Thus, anybody with a nuisance alligator should contact the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), and they will send a professional trapper.
