Alicia Silverstone is an iconic actress. She first skyrocketed to fame in the 1990s, making her film debut in the 1993 thriller “The Crush,” and earning an MTV Movie Award for her role the following year. It’s not surprising that she became a teen idol shortly afterward, especially for appearing in Aerosmith’s music video for the song “Cryin.’”

But of course, who could forget Silverstone’s turn in the leading role of Cher Horowitz from the 1995 teen comedy “Clueless.” The film was a major success following its release and has become a cult classic since then, with many fans calling it one of the best teen films of all time. Alongside Silverstone, the movie also featured Paul Rudd, Stacey Dash, Donald Faison and Brittany Murphy.

After finding even more fame from “Clueless,” Silverstone continued acting in prominent roles, including her turn as Batgirl in the 1997 release of “Batman & Robin.” She also appeared in television shows during the early 2000s and has continued to appear in film, television and even on the stage.

And while Silverstone is known for her acting chops, she is also known for her activism and humanitarian work, as well as her parenting style. A mom of one, Silverstone's approach to parenting has always been to give her son the freedom to be true to himself, make his own decisions, and be his own person.

Silverstone made headlines when her then-9-year-old son cut his long locks. Now, the actress’s son is 11 but still sleeps in the same bed as Silverstone. While some may argue that is overparenting, Silverstone said that she is just following nature.

Silverstone’s son, Bear, had long luscious hair since he was a toddler. It became his trademark; he loved it and chose to keep it that way as he grew up. But at the age of 9, Bear decided to chop off his long brown locks in favor of a new short style.

The "Clueless" actress documented the big event in a video that she later posted on Instagram. In the video, Silverstone asked her son, "What are we doing right now?" Bear answered, "Cutting my hair." She then asked him, "Why?" And his answer was something we are probably all familiar with: "I have no idea." But sometimes, even if you have no idea, you just need to do it anyway! He also added that he was both very excited and very nervous to be having such a significant change.

The doting mom went on to talk about how much Bear had enjoyed having long hair:

"The reason he chose to keep it for as long as he did was because he loved it so much!!! He just wanted to try something new. Although I have a feeling he'll find a way back to his long hair again in the future. No matter what though, I will always support my sweet, caring and precious little boy in every decision he makes."

In her post, Silverstone told the world why Bear wanted a new hairstyle. "Was it his decision? Yes. Did I cry inside as I watched him get it cut? Maybe ... but did I try to stop him? Not for one second," she wrote.

Silverstone and Bear's dad, her ex-husband Christopher Jarecki, are entirely behind the decisions that Bear makes as long as he is true to himself and it's what makes him happy.

Silverstone continued, "No matter what, I will always support my sweet, caring, and precious little boy in every decision he makes.”

In July 2022, Silverstone appeared on “The Ellen Fisher Podcast” and spoke more about her parenting style, specifically how she and her 11-year-old son share a bed. “Bear and I still sleep together,” she said. “I’ll be in trouble for saying that, but I really don’t care.”

Dr. Craig Canapari told Good Morning America that “there are many different ways to successfully parent your child,” and that bed-sharing “may be one of those ways.” He believed there was no evidence that this parenting style would be “unhealthy or dangerous or cause any psychological issues.”

GMA also described Silverstone’s parenting style as attachment parenting. According to WebMD, this type of parenting focuses on a nurturing connection that is seen as ideal for raising “secure, independent and empathetic children.”

For Silverstone, being a mom comes easily, and she said that she is simply just “following nature.” She explained:

“I’m a natural mama. And I’m a loving mama. And I believe in love and I believe in nature, and our society is scared of nature and scared of love.”

The actress continued: “If you were in any kind of wild setting where there are animals, if you put your baby over there, your baby is going to get eaten. It’s not ideal for the baby to be over there.”

Even though some people may argue that Silverstone is babying her son too much, it’s clear that she is a devoted mother and loves Bear with her whole heart and is just parenting in a way that makes sense for their family unit.
