The heartfelt photograph shows the couple on their wedding day, with Alex slipping a ring on Jean's finger. Jean is wearing a gorgeous white dress while Trebek donned a white suit. They shared almost 30 years together as a married couple, and have two children, son Matthew, 29, who is a restaurateur in Manhattan, and daughter Emily, 27, who works in real estate in Los Angeles. Trebek also has another daughter, Nicky, 53, from his previous marriage.
The love story that Jean shares with her late husband is a beautiful one: they met in 1988 through a mutual friend and fell in love quickly. At the time, Trebek had been hosting Jeopardy! for only 4 years and was recently divorced from his first wife, businesswoman Elaine Callei, reports People. Jean was a part-time bookkeeper for one of Trebek's friends.
Speaking to People in July 2020, Trebek shared how his wife had been a rock for him through his stage-IV pancreatic cancer diagnosis. “If it weren’t for Jean, I’d have put myself out of this a long time ago,” he said.
In his memoir The Answer Is...Reflections On My Life, he elaborated further on the love he and his wife shared, as People reported. “With Jean it just happened,” he wrote. “Sometimes you look at something, you look at someone, and you know. I mean, you’ve heard stories of people who meet and decide within half an hour; I knew this was going to be the person I’d end up with. With Jeanie that’s how it was. I wasn’t looking for love. But I recognized at a gut level that here was someone who was going to complete me as a human being.”

While his wife also felt the same way, both of them reportedly had reservations about their 24-year age gap. "At first it worried me,” Alex told People in 1990. “But then I thought, ‘To hell with it. We’ll make it work.' ”
The marriage certainly worked out, and the couple had shared many happy years together. In another interview with People in March 2019, Trebek had said about all his decisions, "I’m pretty satisfied with my life.” He also wished that he had met his wife earlier and added, "... if I’d just met Jean in my 20s we could have had a longer life together.”
He kept true to his innate sense of humor even on his wedding day. In his memoir, he writes, "When the minister said, 'Do you, Alex, take Jean to be your wife?' I said, 'The answer is ... Yes.’ ” He added, "Leave it to me, always trying to go for a laugh. And I got one. Everybody cracked up." His rare and witty sense of humor had helped him with both his career as well as personal life, and his absence leaves behind a large void.
Alex Trebek has certainly made a major imprint in the entertainment industry that will be celebrated for many years. He also leaves behind very large shoes to fill in for whoever will follow him to host Jeopardy! Our thoughts are with his widow, Jean during this difficult time.
