Alex opened up during an interview with ABC News about his pancreatic cancer diagnosis and why it is now forcing him to stop hosting. The 79-year-old revealed he was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer and shared a video in March of 2019 announcing the sad news. He was optimistic and said, “I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.”

And for a moment it seemed Trebek would beat the low survival rates. Last summer, Trebek said his treatment was going well. He had told People, “The doctors said they hadn’t seen this kind of positive result in their memory…some of the tumors have already shrunk by more than 50 percent.” It was fantastic news for a diagnosis of cancer that has a 9% survival rate.

However, in fall, the host said that he had prematurely thought he was finished with chemo. He was beginning immunotherapy when he says, “my numbers went south dramatically and quickly.” He went on to say that “the doctors are now reexamining my situation and I will have more chemo treatments ahead of me.”

Speaking with ABC News, Trebek says he doesn't know when his last show will be but he already knows what he's going to do and what he will sign off with.

"I will say my goodbyes and I will tell people, ‘Don’t ask me who’s going to replace me because I have no say whatsoever. But I’m sure that if you give them the same love and attention and respect that you have shown me...

...then they will be a success and the show will continue being a success,'' he said. "And until we meet again, God bless you and goodbye.”
