Alex Trebek Fights Back Tears After Surprise ‘Final Jeopardy’ Answer

On a recent episode of "Jeopardy!" Alex Trebek fought back tears when one of the contestants wrote an endearing message to Trebek as one of his answers. Trebek recently admitted his hosting skills have started to ‘diminish’ due to the chemotherapy treatment he is going through.

Trebek was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic cancer and shared a video in March announcing the sad news. He was optimistic and said, “I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease.” However after months of chemotherapy and treatment Trebek revealed he knows he is "nearing the end" of his life.

When speaking to CTV Trebek said,

"The thought of the pancreatic cancer does not frighten me. I'm 79 years old. So, hey, I've lived a good life, a full life, and I'm nearing the end of that life. I know that."

In one of the recent episodes of "Jeopardy!" contestant Dhruv Gaur decided to use his answer as a message for the long-time host. The answer read, "What is we love you Alex!" As Trebek read the answer aloud he was caught off guard by the sincerity saying "thank- you that's very kind" as he began to choke back tears. The host then told Gaur how much money he lost for sacrificing his answer just to write that message.

On social media, Gaur said about the moment: I’m just very grateful I got the opportunity to say what I know everyone was thinking. Sending all the love." Gaur also gave a little background information on what made him give the answer writing,

"For context, Alex had just shared with us that he was reentering treatment for pancreatic cancer. We were all hurting for him so badly. When Final Jeopardy came up, I could’ve tried to puzzle it together, but really, just kept thinking about Alex, and thought he should know."

He responded to a question from CTV asking how much longer he would want to continue doing ‘Jeopardy!’ and said that he would go on until it affects the show. He knows that he is beginning to slur his words because of sores inside his mouth from chemo.

“I’m sure there are observant members of the television audience that notice also, but they’re forgiving,” Trebek said. “But there will come a point when they will no longer be able to say, ‘It’s okay.'"

However, the host shared in September to Good Morning America, "As long as I can walk out and greet the audience and the contestants and run the game I'm happy."
