Alec Baldwin Wants To Free Sick, Obese Bear Locked In Concrete Enclosure At Pennsylvania Sportsmen's Club

Actor and animal rights activist Alec Baldwin is on a crusade to free an Asiatic black bear named Dillan from the Union County Sportsmen’s Club in Millmont, Pennsylvania.

Dillan is a resident at the club where he spends his days suffering in a poorly kept concrete cage from arthritis, psychological stress, toothpain, and severe obesity as a result of being fed scraps from the restaurant according to a PETA article.

The USDA has been on-site to the club for several inspections that see numerous code violations including failures to provide animals with shelter or food, reports a PETA factsheet, confirming wretched conditions for any living creature. The poor bear's situation is abyssmal and Alec Baldwin wants to change that for him.

Baldwin has recently written a letter to the governor of Pennsylvania, Thomas Wolf, to urge him to release the bear to a wildlife sanctuary at no cost to his current owners. He mentions that this is a follow-up to his first request from September with initially called for urgent action because of Dillan's health and veterinary needs.

"Dillan suffers from life-threatening dental disease and arthritis, problems caused and exacerbated by his morbid obesity and confinement on concrete," Baldwin writes.

"He's estimated to be at least 400 pounds overweight, and wildlife experts have said that he's the most obese bear they've ever seen. He exhibits signs of severe psychological distress and spends his days rocking back and forth in his cage, which is sometimes so filled with feces that he can't move around without touching it.

The letter goes on to say that Dillan could be happy in the sanctuary running, digging, and swimming—a much better and freer life for the bear.

PETA also reports on several other animals at the facility including birds that must drink out of filthy water tanks, a geriatric bobcat, and a raccoon that is languishing without proper shelter needs. The conditions are unacceptable in any circumstance but added to the constant loud gunfire from the club, it is unbearable for these animals.
