Airline Told Woman To ‘Cover Up Or Leave The Plane’ Because They Found Her Crop Top Inappropriate

Emily O'Connor, a 21-year-old woman from Birmingham, says she shook with fright after workers for Thomas Cook told her she would have to exit her flight to Tenerife if she did not 'cover-up.' Emily says she was preparing to fly to the Canary Island early last month when airline workers approached her. They told her the yellow trousers and crop top she wore was not appropriate for the flight.

Emily was given a jacket by her cousin. But this was after a comment about her appearance was made over the intercom system. The experience left her upset and afraid. Apparently, she wore the same crop top on her return trip to Birmingham and had no problem with airline staff.

The airline apologized for the incident but claimed its 'inappropriate attire' policy is clearly explained in its in-flight magazine. The clothing policy for Thomas Cook explains a person clothed in inappropriate attire will not be permitted to fly unless they possess a change of clothing.

Airline workers told Emily other passengers could find her choice of attire offensive and that staff members were in place to grab her luggage and take it off the plane.

Emily responded by telling the worker there was no such policy mentioned online. She also stood and asked other passengers if her choice of clothing offended them. The flight crew even stood silent while a man on the plane hurled insults and abuse in her direction. Emily was shaking with fear and it was obvious. But the staff continued to allow her to be ridiculed and sexualized. It was the worst experience of her life.

While no one with airport security or passport control had a problem with her crop top, the airline workers refused to let her on to the plane without covering up. The crop top worn by Emily was made by the high-end retailer Zara. The young woman has received loads of support online after the incident.
