Air Force Officials Are Looking For People To Adopt Retired Military Dogs

Officials with the Air Force at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland are pleading with the public to consider adopting one of their many retired K-9 dogs.

While many people flock to adopt puppies or younger K-9s, the retired dogs are often a harder sell. The former military dogs have spent a majority of their life in service for the country. However, they cannot keep up the work forever and eventually need to be placed into loving homes to live out the rest of their lives.

The base said that it is easy to find homes for the trainee puppies that do not make the cut to serve in active duty, according to the Military Times. Prospective owners prefer to take in the puppies rather than looking at the older dogs that have already served their time.

Officials say that the dogs are suitable for adoption by both military members and civilians. The only stipulations are that applicants need to have a 6-foot fence in their yard and no more than three dogs already. They also say that there should be no children under the age of five in the home. Additionally, the applicant needs to provide the name of their veterinarian as well as references. The adoption process can take up to two years because of the vetting process.
