AI Portrait Shows How Princess Diana Might Have Looked Like Later In Life

An AI-generated portrait of Diana, Princess of Wales, has drawn attention for imagining one of the world’s most recognizable public figures at an age she never reached. The striking image is part of “As If Nothing Happened,” a digital art project by Istanbul-based lawyer and photographer Alper Yesiltas. In the series, Yesiltas uses artificial intelligence and photo-editing techniques to create lifelike portraits of cultural icons whose lives ended early.
The project featured Princess Diana alongside figures such as Freddie Mercury, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain, Janis Joplin and Elvis Presley. Yesiltas described the work on Behance as an AI-based collection, asking how people might look “photo-realistically” if certain life-changing events had not happened to them. In an interview with My Modern Met, he explained the emotional idea behind the images.
“When I started tinkering with the technology. I saw what I could do and thought about what would make me the happiest: I wanted to see some of the people I missed again in front of me.”
Diana remains a meaningful subject for such a project because her image is still tied to beauty, compassion and public memory. The portrait cannot show exactly how she would have looked, but it reflects the lasting emotional connection many people feel toward her. It also shows how AI art can become a powerful, if complicated, way to revisit cultural memory, especially when the image is clearly labeled as an artistic interpretation.

Diana Frances Spencer was born on July 1, 1961, at Park House near Sandringham, Norfolk. According to the Royal Family’s official biography, she came from an aristocratic family with close ties to the royal household. She married the then-Prince Charles on July 29, 1981, and became Diana, Princess of Wales. Their sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, were born in 1982 and 1984, respectively.
Although Diana’s wedding made her one of the most famous women in the world, her marriage was troubled and intensely scrutinized. Charles and Diana separated in 1992 and divorced on Aug. 28, 1996. Diana died on Aug. 31, 1997, after a car crash in Paris. She was 36 years old.
Diana’s legacy reaches far beyond royal history. Britannica noted that she used her public profile to support charitable causes and helped reshape expectations of a modern royal role. She became closely associated with work involving HIV and AIDS awareness, homelessness, leprosy and landmine victims. Her warmth with people who were often ignored or stigmatized became one of the most remembered parts of her public life.
That was why Yesiltas’s portrait carried so much emotional weight. Diana is often remembered as a fashion icon and a devoted mother, but also as someone whose life ended before many imagined chapters could unfold. The AI image offered a bittersweet view of possibility: an older Diana with familiar grace, softness and poise.
The photo received thousands of strong reactions from royal family watchers and Diana fans when Yesiltas posted it online with the caption:
“As if nothing happened.”
It is not an authentic photograph, and it should always be understood as art rather than fact. Still, for admirers, it captured the question behind the project’s title: what might the world have seen if nothing had happened?
