Aging Dog Left Crying At A Shelter When Family Abandon Her For A Young Puppy

Shelters are filled with wonderful people who do great things for animals. They aid strays and are not concerned with their age and gender. There are no prejudices based on breeds, and many times the love an animal receives at a shelter is something it has never experienced in its past.

Shelters are amazing but all dogs eventually want a home of their own. Recently, a family in San Bernadino, California agreed to pick up two dogs from a local shelter: a puppy and a dog beginning to show signs of age.

However, the shelter staff was shocked by the family's actions when they arrived to claim the new additions to the family. They picked up the labrador puppy as agreed but they decided they would not take the aging cocker spaniel named Cookie home with them.

Staff members were dismayed while watching Cookie's shocking betrayal. As the family walked out the door without her, Cookie cried and whimpered. One staff member commented to the Sacramento Bee that it was like they were walking away and leaving the heartbroken dog to die.

Cookie is old and suffers from some illnesses, but shelter members are happy to care for her. She is believed to be about fifteen years old and is recovering from surgery to remove tumors from her body. Cookie has a heart filled with love and still awaits the opportunity to return that love to an individual or family that accepts it.

Fortunately, the shelter in Bernardino County was able to find a foster mother who wanted Cookie and would care for the dog as she continued to age. Foster agreements are not the same as a dog adoption and allow the shelter to provide the foster mother with more help. The deal is great for all involved and Cookie now has the constant love and attention she needs.

The shelter is now encouraging visitors to take a look at older dogs housed there. These dogs are often overlooked but make great pets.

What did you think about the family's treatment of Cookie? Are you happy she was still able to find a foster mom? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
