After Woman's Father Gives Her DNA Kit For Christmas, She Finds Out He's Not Her Biological Dad

Sep 04, 2021 by apost team

DNA kits have become very popular in the last few years. The easy, at-home genetic testing kits make great gifts and help people learn incredible things about their ancestral history or identify potential health risks. One other benefit is they allow people to use their tests to match with family members who share DNA, which can reveal shocking information if your parents aren’t who you thought they were.

This scenario happened to a woman named Cat McDonald from Nashville, Tennessee. She revealed on her TikTok account that her test results said the man she believed to be her dad her entire life was not her biological father. However, the site did find her a 100% paternal DNA match. This is how a Christmas gift uncovered a family secret.

McDonald was told her whole life that she was Irish, and with her surname being what it is and her bright red hair, she took that as fact. When the DNA test that her dad bought her for Christmas came back, however, it said she was 75% Norwegian with some British and German ancestry as well. And she was not Irish at all.

When McDonald brought this up with her family, her father said it was impossible because his own test said he was Irish, so Cat had to be as well. This is when they noticed that the man McDonald matched with as her father was not her dad, but instead an old family friend that her mother and aunts remembered. Media outlets reported on McDonald’s story in January 2021 after her video went viral. Read on to learn more about these shocking DNA test results.

In her video, McDonald explained: “My dad came up with the brilliant idea of giving the entire family Ancestry DNA kits last year for Christmas. I identify as Irish because my last name is McDonald and my hair is bright red. Turns out, I’m 75% Norwegian, and the rest is like German and British, and there’s zero Irish. So I called my dad and said, ‘Guess what? I’m not Irish at all.’”

She went on, adding: “He said, ‘There’s no way you’re not Irish!' So with my dad on the phone, I logged into my account to see if I had any DNA matches, and I had an exact paternal match. It just wasn’t him!”

"Everyone, including my mother, was ... shook," she added.

McDonald explained in her TikTok that she wanted to find some answers, so she did what anyone else would do and googled the name of her biological father. It turns out, he is a very wealthy CEO of a major company and has three other daughters. McDonald claimed the man is a billionaire, but she could have been exaggerating for dramatic effect.

“He is the CEO of a major company and his three daughters work for him, and naturally, like the unstable millennial that I am, I drive halfway across the country to his corporate office,” McDonald said. “I tried to give him a letter, but when he heard my name he refused to meet with me. Basically, all it really said was 'thank you' because I'm really happy to be alive.”

Since media outlets picked up McDonald’s story in January 2021, there haven’t been any updates, and her TikTok account, @fretlessfeline, has since been removed.
