The prospect of finding love in the public eye has made for some binge-worthy television. This concept has become so popular that it’s no longer unique to just American media.

First Dates, a British show helping hopeless romantics find their true love, pairs two singles together with hopes of sparking a connection. As the two get to know one another over a meal, spectators watch as the awkward first date pleasantries unfold.

According to the show's website, producers of the show describe it as a documentary series helping “contributors find a partner from a pool of singletons.” The most delicious moments of the show are those that illustrate the “highs and lows of first dates.”

While the show is hallmarked for its cheesy anecdotes and cringy interviews, there are rare occasions when a truly soul-stirring couple is featured just to tug on your heartstrings. Ruth and Richard are one such duo.

Richard, a WWII veteran, is a 97-year-old gentleman with a heart of gold. Ruth, who’s equally as charming, hasn’t lost faith in finding love either. Their zest for love and life make them the ultimate match.

After losing his first wife to cancer and second to pneumonia, Richard is ready to get back in the saddle. Richard admits that though his body isn’t young, his brain is. Ruth has a similar perspective on life.

Over lunch, the two express their likes and dislikes all while sharing gripping stories. Ruth was especially engrossed when Richard was recounting some of his war stories. Ruth found his narratives “amazing” and stared at him in awe for the remainder of the date.

As fate would have it, Ruth and Richard agreed to meet again. While their next lunch date may not be documented, you can be sure that sparks will be flying.
