Jennifer Garner is no stranger to romantic relationships on and off the big screen. She is most known for her work as an actress in a variety of romantic comedies, including “13 Going on 30,” “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” and “Valentine’s Day.” This type of role typically comes with some sweet and sentimental romance scenes in the films. Some of the men Garner has been associated with on-screen include Matthew McConaughey, Patrick Dempsey and Mark Ruffalo.

In her real life, Garner has been famously linked to Scott Foley, her co-star from the 1998 television series “Felicity.” The pair married in an at-home ceremony in October 2000, but filed for divorce a few years later with it being finalized in March 2004. Afterward, Garner dated her “Alias” co-star, Michael Vartan.

It wasn’t long before Garner began dating the man most people were accustomed to associating her with – Ben Affleck. The pair first began their romance back in mid-2004 and went on to get married the following year in a private ceremony. Together, Garner and Affleck have three kids – two daughters, Violet and Seraphina, and one son, Samuel. Sadly, this relationship also didn’t last, resulting in divorce in October 2018.

Still, it’s clear that Garner is a romantic at heart. While being recognized at the 2022 Hasty Pudding Award from Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals, the actress reflected on some of her earlier romances, specifically her very first kiss. Unfortunately, the relationship didn’t go too well, as her boyfriend at the time actually broke up with the very next day. Read on to find out more about Garner’s life, career and love stories.

Garner had spent a lot of time in the spotlight, meaning much of her professional and personal life has been shared with people from all over the world. She found her first wave of success from the ABC television series “Alias,” which aired from 2001 until 2006. During this time, she also began to make a real name for herself in the industry by starring in a variety of highly successful films, including “13 Going On 30,” “Pearl Harbor,” “Daredevil” and “Elektra.”

After finding success through films and television series, Garner decided to use her platform for the betterment of others. She works as an activist for early childhood education and is also a board member of Save the Children USA. On top of that, Garner also advocates for anti-paparazzi campaigns for children of celebrities.

During an interview with PBS in October 2020, Garner opened up about what it was like dealing with the paparazzi on a daily basis while trying to raise her three children alongside her then-husband Affleck. Garner revealed that no matter what she was doing or where she was going, there was always paparazzi there following her and her children.

The constant swarm of cameras and lack of privacy became too much, leading to Garner teaming up with actress Halle Berry in a lawsuit to help protect their children from the incessant nature of the paparazzi. The Los Angeles Times reported that both actresses testified in front of the California state government to lobby for legislation that would protect their kids. The law eventually was passed, resulting in a difference in the way the media handled celebrities’ children.

Self-Love And Care

As someone who has spent a couple of decades in the public eye, Garner has gotten used to receiving criticism and scrutiny from others. However, she has managed to keep viewing herself in a healthy light while encouraging others to do the same.

While Garner has certainly had her fair share of romances in her life, she has also expressed how important it is to love yourself and take care of yourself. Speaking with TODAY in December 2021, the actress talked about how she used to do her makeup quite heavy, as that was what she thought was the most beautiful. However, she has since taken a more natural approach, and embraces her imperfections and flaws as they are what make her normal.

Garner also now has a better approach to combating self-criticism compared to how she used to react when she saw unflattering photographs of herself from paparazzi. “I try to not see unflattering pictures of myself because I know I look better in real life than paparazzi pictures make me look, and if I don’t, I don’t want to know it,” she explained.

Garner also has tips for anyone struggling with their own feelings toward themselves and their appearances, and encourages people to spend time away from looking at their reflection in the mirror. “When you start getting super critical of yourself, turn around, pivot in that spot and go do something nice for someone else,” she said. “Or go work out, or just take that and make it active instead of letting it just fester in you.”

Reflecting On Her Relationships

It’s clear that some of Garner’s on-screen romances trickled down into off-screen romances as well, as she has dated a few of her co-stars over the years. Although none of these relationships may have panned out the way the actress hoped, she still learned a lot about love and partnerships through these experiences.

In fact, she recently reflected on some lesser known love stories. On Feb. 5, 2022, Garner received the 2022 Hasty Pudding Award for Woman of the Year from Harvard University’s Hasty Pudding Theatricals, according to Yahoo News. During the ceremony, Garner took part in a Q&A game inspired by one of her most recent films, “Yes Day.” It was a great chance for Garner to share some of her earlier romances, specifically the story about her very first kiss.

Garner was more than happy to share some of the details surrounding her then-relationship, and how her first kiss went. She was 18 years old at the time. “It was a guy named Matt Crittenden,” she said. “He tried to go further than a kiss, and I swatted it away.”

It turned out that that was the breaking point for her then-boyfriend, as he gave Garner some rough news the following day. “He broke up with me the next day because he said I was a prude, which was a badge I’ve worn proudly ever since,” Garner explained.

It’s safe to say that Garner has learned a lot about herself through her various relationships, from the time she was 18 to her present-day self at the age of 49. Here’s hoping this romantic-comedy star continues to find love and happiness in the future!
