Although he has been very public about his battle with Parkinson's disease, it is only recently that the beloved celebrity has opened up about his recent health challenge.

Fox has not always been vocal about his fight against Parkinson's. Although he was originally diagnosed with the disease in 1991, he kept the news about the neurological disorder to himself for seven years.

In an exclusive interview with CBS, the 57-year-old shared news of a new struggle that he is grappling with. This recent challenge involves problems with his spinal cord. Although doctors told him that the issue was benign, Fox knew it would eventually start to interfere with his everyday life.

Fox made the decision that he did not want his quality of life to diminish. This is why he decided to have the surgery to address it last April. Despite the intensive surgery and hours of physical therapy, the issue was not completely resolved.

He told the New York Times:

"I was having this recurring problem with my spinal cord. I was told it was benign but if it stayed static I would have diminished feeling in my legs and difficulty moving. Then all of a sudden I started falling — a lot. It was getting ridiculous. I was trying to parse what was the Parkinson’s and what was the spinal thing. But it came to the point where it was probably necessary to have surgery. "

The famous actor said that he still has hope that there will someday be a cure for Parkinson's. He will continue the fight to secure funding so that research can be performed.

To realize this goal, he launched a foundation called the Michael J. Fox Foundation in the year 2000 which, according to their website, has helped raise over $800 million towards research into the disease.

In this video, Fox opens up and talks about his recent struggles and how he finds the strength to confront each new challenge.
