Baby oil is a household staple that is used for many things. However, the presence of 'baby' in the product name does not mean it cannot be dangerous.

Unfortunately, this lesson was learned the hard way by JennaJoy Ingraham. The lesson nearly caused her to lose her son. She now uses social media to warn everyone who will listen about the dangers of baby oil.

Eighteen-month-old Grayson grabbed a bottle of the oil one morning at about ten. JennaJoy explains that the episode happened while the rest of Grayson's family were readying themselves to attend church. The event took place on November 26. Grayson's father, Casey, saw what was happening almost immediately. He took the bottle of baby oil from the toddler. The 'yuck' face made by Grayson was an indication that he had already tasted some of the baby oil.

A little while later the family noticed Grayson was acting strangely. Grayson's mother explained her son seemed lethargic. He was not responding to attempts to communicate from his family and was nodding in and out of sleep. When awake, he was unresponsive and blinked slower than anyone in the house had ever witnessed.

JennaJoy says when she lifted the baby it was like lifting dead weight. He continued to fall asleep even when she held him. She says her family gave a call to the on-call nurse as a result of his behavior. If not for the behavior of Grayson, they would have never remembered the baby oil he drank.

The nurse instructed JennaJoy to call the Poison Control Center. The families were then told to take Grayson to the nearest emergency room. The voice on the phone informed the family Grayson may have gotten some of the baby oil in his lungs. Poison Control explained to JennaJoy that most people have no idea how dangerous baby oil is to consume. The control center also called ahead to the emergency room alerting them to the impending arrival of Grayson. This caused the family considerable panic.

JennaJoy stayed home with her son Bry while Casey took Grayson to the hospital. The doctor attending to Grayson told Casey they would need to stay for a while because the symptoms would begin later if there were to be a serious problem. X-rays were taken and the physician explained that drinking baby oil was not much different in its effect to drinking gasoline.

In fact, the website for Poison Control ranks baby oil in a way that is comparable to lighter fluid. The website explains that baby oil is a hydrocarbon that can make its way into the lungs if the substance is swallowed. Similar substances include kerosene, lighter fluid, gasoline, and motor oil. Children that consume baby oil or another hydrocarbon need to be carefully observed for a period of time to assure that no hydrocarbon is in the lungs.

Choking and coughing accompanied by a fever is a sign of serious trouble. This condition can result in pneumonia and even death if prompt treatment is not given. Fortunately, Grayson did not experience any of these symptoms and was soon allowed to go home. His parents are now seeking to alert as many people as possible to the dangers of this seemingly harmless oil.
