Louie is the beloved dog of a farming couple living in New Zealand. While he used to wander fairly freely, at the age of 12, he was sticking closer to home, so it worried his family when he disappeared for the whole day. What they learned when he returned put a big smile on their faces.

As soon as Louie arrived back at home, his owners noticed that he had a note attached to his collar. When they read it, they realized that it was from their good friend and neighbor, who had spent much of the day in Louie's company.

The brief note explained that the reason Louie had gone missing was that he was helping their neighbor's dog, Maddy, who had gotten stuck in a woodpile. Marolyn Diver, who owns Louie, quickly called her neighbor Rob for a more detailed explanation.

It turned out that Maddy had been missing for some time, and he was out looking for her.

Louie had been trying to get his attention, and he finally succeeded. He proceeded to lead the farmer to his dog and help him dig the pooch out of the woodpile. Afterward, both dogs rewarded themselves with a long drink of pond water.

While Louie may not be as prone to wandering as he used to be, he's perfectly willing to go out of his way to help a friend. Canine or human, Louie is just the kind of pal we'd all love to have!

This tender story of a neighborly pooch helping another dog in need is a welcome example of all the good that is in the world. How would you reward Louie for his determination if he were yours?
