Adult Son Pretends To Be His Mother's Long-Distance Boyfriend To Prove She Is Being Duped

“Dr. Phil” is a television talk show famous for covering a wide range of topics, from helping repair broken family relationships to allowing people to share their deepest darkest secrets to uncovering true crime stories. Starring Phil McGraw, famously known as Dr. Phil, the show has been on air since 2002 and has become a guilty pleasure for many people all around the world for its coverage of sometimes heavy and controversial topics.

A woman by the name of Nancy went on the show in November 2021 to talk about an online relationship she’s been in for the past two years with a man named Shaun. While Nancy has found herself falling completely in love with Shaun, her son has expressed his distaste for the relationship and believes that Shaun is actually just trying to scam her out of all of her money. Darcy, her son, pointed out that Nancy doesn’t even know what Shaun looks like.

It seemed like a typical catfish situation, where someone goes on the internet pretending to be somewhere they aren’t in order to get some kind of payoff, whether it be a beautiful relationship with someone out of their league or a large chunk of cash from someone they have manipulated. 

However, Nancy was positive that her boyfriend was real even though she had never seen Shaun in person or even heard his voice. Finally, Darcy revealed the truth behind all of his concerns surrounding Shaun. He pretended to be him in order to prove to his mom that she was being lied to.

In November 2021, Nancy and Darcy appeared on an episode of “Dr. Phil” titled “Catfish Controversy: A Mom and Son Face Off!” While Nancy was head over heels in love with her online boyfriend Shaun, her son was convinced that he wasn’t really who he said he was and that he was just using Nancy for her money. 

Over the course of their two-year relationship, Nancy has never seen Shaun in person or on a virtual call or even heard what his voice sounds like. She explained that Shaun was stuck in Dubai because he didn’t have the $20,000 needed to pay his taxes.

All of this didn’t stop her from falling for him, though, and she sent him thousands of dollars in cash and gift cards. She even referred to him as her “soulmate” and as “the light of my life.” She explained, “I do this because I love him and I care for him.”

However, Darcy wasn’t convinced that Shaun was who he said he was and didn’t believe that his intentions were good. He tried to prove this to Nancy, but she wouldn’t listen. He was also upset that his mom was so willing to send money to who he viewed as a complete stranger but wouldn’t send any to help him and his wife, Lindsey. They were trying to have a baby through IVF. Nancy had grown tired of her son discrediting her relationship. “My son Darcy is controlling, rude and argumentative,” she said. “My relationship with my son and daughter-in-law is broken.”

Nancy decided to finally make an appearance on “Dr. Phil” with the hopes of working on her relationship with Darcy and Lindsey and believed that her relationship with Shaun was perfectly fine as is. However, Darcy had other plans and was ready to share a secret when he made a virtual appearance on the television talk show.

It turned out that Darcy created a fake account shadowing Shaun as an attempt to prove to his mother that she was being lied to and scammed out of her money. There was just one letter difference in the account name. Darcy went on to email his mom under Shaun’s name, showing just how sadly easy it was to fool her. She had even sent him a gift card, assuming that Darcy was Shaun.

“That’s how easy it is to impersonate someone else,” Dr. Phil said. Nancy was shocked. She realized the point everyone was trying to make, saying, “That people scam people. That there’s bad people out there.” 

However, she seemed to want to stay in her relationship with Shaun. Speaking about her son’s actions, Nancy said, “I don’t know why he’s so obsessed with me and this thing with Shaun.” Darcy replied, “I’m obsessed with this situation because I love my mom.” He did everything he could to try to protect his mother, whether she wanted it or not.

“I still have to keep an open mind,” Nancy said. She explained that she was still planning on talking to Shaun and hoped that one day he would give her her money back.
