Adorable Lonely Shelter Dog Wants To Hold Hands With People Who Come To Visit

Stray dogs lead a tough life as they constantly search for food without the comfort of a roof over their head. While many people might think that being put in a shelter solves all the problems stray dogs face, it also presents them with new ones. While shelter dogs and cats enjoy a hearty meal each night and the veterinary care they desperately need, many are faced with the prospect of euthanasia if they are not adopted within a certain timespan.

Additionally, each of these animals beg for affection in a place where volunteers only have so much time to care for all of their charges. Such is the story of a stray dog who spent over a year at a shelter in Alabama.

Speck the dog resided at the Bullock County Humane Society for over a year. Looking at the big guy, one could tell that he had a rough life before being rescued from the street. Speck’s sweet face was full of scars, but that difficult past did not dampen his drive for life. Each time anyone passed by his cage, Speck would reach out his paw and ask someone to hold his hand.

In an interview with reporters from The Dodo, Desiray Miracle-Wilder, the director of the Bullock County Humane Society, said that the sight of Speck begging for attention was heartbreaking. While Speck had several animal friends at the shelter, he most preferred contact with humans.

Every time Desiray or one of the volunteers saw Speck, they would sit by his cage and hold his paw, rubbing his head to let him know that he was loved. When it came time to go on with their task, Speck would look forlorn at having been left in his cage with no one to keep him company.

Hoping to increase Speck’s chance of finding a forever home, Desiray decided to film Speck holding her hand. The video quickly became a viral hit for the Bullock County Humane Society, having been watched over 96,000 times on social media. After seeing the video, a family adopted Speck through another rescue group, Allie’s Hope For Paws Dog Rescue.

Desiray says that the family is in for a real treat in welcoming Speck into their home. Having known the big guy for over a year, Desiray says that he is an incredibly affectionate dog. Desiray tells that when someone goes to sit with Speck, he sits on their lap and will gladly roll over to accept a tummy rub from anyone lucky enough to pet him.

Speck’s video also helped several other animals from the Bullock County Humane Society get adopted into forever homes and further encouraged people to donate an abundance of pet food to the shelter. The now adopted pooch is currently awaiting transport to his new home. While Speck will miss his brothers and sisters from the shelter, Desiray is confident that people will open their hearts and their homes to their other adoptable animals.

Speck’s new owner, Mike, owns 26 acres of property, where the playful dog will be able to run and enjoy life with Mike’s other pets, reports The Dodo. In the end, Speck’s video is proof of the power that comes from opening your heart to the love of an animal. The workers at the Bullock County Humane Society did everything in their power to help Speck find a forever family and, in so doing, saved his life and the lives of several other animals.
