Adele Makes Rare Appearance On Video To Mark Grenfell Fire’s 4th Anniversary

Award-winning vocalist Adele has been topping the charts since her popular song "Chasing Pavements" hit the Billboard Hot 100 chart back in 2009. Since then, Adele has given us timeless hits, such as "Hello," "Rolling in the Deep," "Someone Like You," "Skyfall," and "Rumor Has It," among many others. Although we haven't received a new album from Adele since 2015, the singer seems to be focused more on her personal development and family rather than music at the moment.

Adele is a mother to her son Angelo Adkins, and instead of making music, Adele has focused on her family and her own health in the last few years. The singer decided to take a huge leap forward regarding her health and lost almost 100 pounds. Motivated to get healthy so that she could be a better mother to her son, Adele's weight loss journey is one that has seemed to make the singer extremely happy, healthy and confident.

Not only has she touted the benefits of getting fit, but she's also been outspoken on other practices that have helped her to feel grounded and grow as a person. In 2020, she was vocal about author Glennon Doyle's book "Untamed: Stop Pleasing, Start Living" and how it helped her to live a better and more authentic life.

Another way in which the songstress is giving back to others is by using her fame to bring awareness to topics that matter. Teaming up with Grenfell United — an organization comprising the families of victims and survivors of the fire that claimed 72 lives and injured hundreds of others in 2017 — Adele appeared in a recent video that was released on the fourth anniversary of the fire. In it, she offers her public support to those affected by the tragedy.

The Grenfell Tower tragedy was a horrific accident that took place on June 14, 2017, when a kitchen fire broke out in a 24-story building in West London. Claiming the lives of 72 people and injuring hundreds more, the accident was the worst residential fire in the United Kingdom since World War II. Over 250 London Fire Brigade firefighters and 70 fire engines came to the site to help. The fire burned for around 60 hours before it was extinguished.

Tragically, the Grenfell Tower Inquiry report found that the building's exterior cladding failed to meet building regulations and was the probable cause of the flames spreading rapidly over the building. Still ongoing, the inquiry has been delayed due to the pandemic, but until now no justice has been made for the victims and survivors.

Made up of families of victims and survivors of the fire, Grenfell United is "working together for our community and campaigning for safe homes, justice and change." In a new hour-long video that the organization released on the fourth anniversary of the fire, Adele appeared in a segment and gave a statement on the disaster. She began:

"Today marks four years since the Grenfell Tower fire, and still, there are so many unanswered questions. Still, the trial is taking way too long, and still, no one has been accountable for that night's events. And yet, Grenfell United is still out here, fighting tirelessly for the justice and for the change that not only they deserve, that their community deserve, that the whole country deserves."

She continues, thanking the people of Grenfell United for putting aside their own personal pain in order to fight the good fight for everyone:

"And for that, I'd like to thank you. Thank you for putting your pain aside for all of these years to fight the fight. I can't imagine the kind of personal consequences that has on you. I really hope that this time next year, you will have the answers that you will need to finally, finally be able to breathe together. I love you, I'll see you soon, stay strong. We're all with you."

It's a moving statement from one of the world's biggest female singers and while it can't make up for the justice that the families deserve, it's a big gesture from Adele. And it's not the first time the singer has been vocal about the Grenfell fire either. The day after it happened she was seen visiting the area in West London showing her support to the local community and hugging individuals. That same month she asked concertgoers to donate to the victims of the tragedy. She also held a few events for those involved including having tea and cake with firefighters who'd helped out, as well as hosting a private screening of "Despicable Me 3" for survivors. In fact, every year since the horrific tragedy, Adele has lent her voice to the cause and publicly marked the anniversary.

In 2020, Meghan Markle also lent her support when she released a cookbook with the Hubb Community Kitchen — which consists of a group of women who came together with the goal of preparing meals for those affected by the Grenfell fire.
