Adam Lambert’s career is on fire. The American Idol season eight runner-up has been drawing innumerable crowds and critical praise since he burst onto the Idol stage in 2009. Despite his great success, Lambert initially had a shaky start in the music business. Before appearing on the music competition show, Lambert was one of thousands of struggling musicians looking to make a name for themselves in Hollywood.
Among his earliest forays into becoming a professional musician was a part in Wicked where he served as an understudy for Fiyero. Lambert also had a stint as lead singer for the band The Citizen Vein.

When Kelly Clarkson won the first American Idol, Lambert was inspired to audition for the program, although he faced numerous doubts. Not only did Lambert think he was the wrong type of performer for the show, but he also worried about what joining the show would mean for his career.
Producers for American Idol require contestants to completely commit themselves to the show. Lambert was concerned about giving up his current jobs to work on the show fulltime.

Despite all his doubts, Lambert ended up auditioning for Idol. His first song, Michael Jackson’s “Rock With You,” didn’t impress judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul, and Kara DioGuardi.
On the verge of losing his big chance, Lambert pleaded for a second chance. For his second audition, Lambert chose the classic Queen hit “Bohemian Rhapsody,” wowing judges and audiences alike. Lambert’s rendition of the song became so famous that it even drew praise from Queen guitarist Brian May.
As the competition went on and Lambert’s star rose, producers for the show invited Queen to perform with Lambert and Kris Allen, who ended up being the season eight winner. Despite enjoying their performance with Allen, May said that the rest of the band felt a natural connection to Lambert.
After the season of American Idol ended, Lambert became Freddie Mercury’s successor as lead singer for Queen, touring with the legendary rockers as Queen + Adam Lambert. The group started touring in 2011, followed by a massive North American tour in 2014. The future holds even bigger joys for fans of the collaboration, as Queen + Adam Lambert will launch the 39-show Rhapsody Tour this July.
