Research concluded by the University of Michigan revealed that the level of your physical strength may have a direct connection in determining the length of your life by extending it. Dr. Kate Duchowny revealed that individuals with less physical strength increased their chances of dying earlier than those who had a grip stronger than the baseline measurement. The likelihood was increased by 50 percent by those with a weaker grip.

According to Duchowny, in order to live a long life while independently aging, it is highly important to retain and increase muscle strength in early and later life. The strength of your grip is thought to be important because of its ability to predict your strength and health as a whole.

It has the potential of being a better indicator of these things compared to instruments used to measure muscle mass. When holding the instrument called the dynamometer, you will squeeze it. Your strength is measured and revealed in kilograms. Other researchers have concluded that testing grip strength may be an effective indicator of the total health of people in all age groups.

Part of the university’s Health and Retirement Study features the UM team analyzing the collected data. The data showed a sample group of 8,326 men and women in the age range of 65 and up. The strength of each individual was determined by threshold points.

The weakness of the muscles was indicated in women by a hand grip strength of less than 22 kg and the men being less than 39 kg. After taking the measurements, 46 percent of the group was labeled as weak according to the given standards. Other research done by other researchers showed the sample groups had only 10 to 13 percent of people being classified as being weak. This was a drastic change from the research done by the UM team.
