Abandoned Horse With 3-Foot-Long Hooves Saved From Barn Where He Spent Over 10 Years By Himself

Quest the horse is living proof that happy endings can come from painful beginnings. You can learn a lot from this little gray horse.

Quest was one of two horses rescued by the Humane Society of Washington County in Woodbine, Maryland in 2015, as reported by USA Today.

The animals had spent almost ten years standing in their own filth, which at some places was over 3 feet deep. They were malnourished, unhealthy, and in desperate need of rescue. Their overgrown hooves curled back on themselves, making normal walking impossible.

One mare had to be put down, but Quest and another horse were transferred to Days End Farm Horse Rescue to begin a new life.

The volunteers from the center called the situation one of the worst cases of neglect they had ever seen. With 25 years of rescue work and 2100 animals cared for, this was quite a big statement.

The horses settled in and started getting the care they needed. Quest quickly stood out as the one with determination and fire. With careful veterinary care and extraordinary farrier work, his rehabilitation began.

In only 4 months, he was healthy enough to be cleared for training.

Then, in 2017, Quest’s life took another huge step when he was adopted by a young woman named Jennie. Together they explored trails, won blue ribbons in dressage, and even started an Instagram page dedicated just to Quest.

Pictures from the page show him hanging out with equine siblings, competing with Jennie, and enjoying the life of a well-loved horse.

So, when you’re feeling stuck in rut, remember that gray stallion, Quest. Despite years of neglect from other humans, he never gave up and never grew bitter. When finally his rescue came, he embraced it with joy, did the work he needed to get better, and found his best life.

Maybe Quest’s story can inspire someone you know who finds themselves in a dark stall and needs to know that good is out there just beyond the door.
