Abandoned Dog Survived In Sewers For Months Before Getting Second Chance

Goldie was an abandoned dog in Bali who survived for months in the sewers before getting a second chance at life.

We know dogs to be cute, loyal, furry friends that bark when the doorbell rings. While they are great companions, dogs are known for their survival skills. In fact, dogs, whether we want to believe it or not, can actually survive without us.

Survival mode can be activated within a dog when it gets lost and realizes it is no longer in a domestic situation. While it does not always happen right away, the dog’s separation from their companion essentially flips a switch and they realize they have to make it on their own.

As unfortunate as this can be, some dogs do not have a choice but to go into survival mode. This was definitely the case for Goldie.

Goldie, a golden retriever from Bali, was found in a sewer. After living on plastic waste and rocks, she was taken in by the Bali Dog Adoption and Rehabilitation Center.

Weighing only 19 pounds, Goldie was withering away–so much so that her skeleton was showing.

After suffering for over a month in the sewer system, survival did not look like it would be in Goldie’s future. Pawbuzz reports that her foster mom, Sandy Button, said:

"An adult Labrador weighing just 9 kg (almost 19 pounds), is quite literally the definition of skin and bones, she was so emaciated that her skin was paper thin and almost translucent."

That was until she was adopted. The treatments she received during rehabilitation and being taken in by her foster mother Sandy Button allow Goldie to get the love and care she needed. In one year, Goldie was able to go from trying to survive to thrive.

Sandy began feeding Goldie five times per day for numerous months to regain her weight and strength. Because of her foster mother, Goldie was also able to learn to walk again. Her hard work and dedication prove a mother’s love can create miracles. Sandy also credits a lot of her success with Goldie’s recovery to her being taken in by the Bali Dog Adoption and Rehabilitation Center.

While dogs can survive on their own, they unfortunately mostly end up like Goldie. To keep lost dog survival efforts going, it is great to donate to centers like the Bali Dog Adoption and Rehabilitation Center.
